Suffocating work culture that cares little for employees

Pros

Doesn't have an uptight dress code.

Cons

Calls employees family members and uses that to say they have a good culture when in fact the culture is very toxic. Very cliquey with very clear favoritism throughout the company. Benefits are terrible especially PTO. You only earn 9 days your first year (this was recently cut to "incentivize" people to work there longer as it takes 5 years to start earning a decent amount of PTO) which is contradictory to their "Live Well(er)" motto. Doesn't respect work/life balance and CEO has even said the way to get promoted is to do unpaid work outside of your job role. Does not support remote work with leaders who get upset if they don't see enough employees in office. Very disorganized leadership with leaders taking no ownership for any of the projects they themselves kick off.

Thank you for sharing your appreciated feedback. We are very sorry to hear your time at Canvas was not what we would hope for any employee to experience. We shared information regarding the time off changes, but we recognize we could have shared more in-depth information regarding the reasoning behind these changes. We provide regular updates through our many channels of communication, which includes weekly organization-wide e-newsletters, an intranet that houses our organization-wide updates, a monthly livestream with our Canvas leaders, and more. We also provide regular opportunities for employees to share their feedback about their Canvas experience, including their thoughts on our benefits. We understand that there is opportunity to improve though, so thank you for sharing your time and thoughts on how we can do that. Another way we support several of our employees is by offering a hybrid work environment. Though many roles at Canvas offer a hybrid schedule, we greatly value the time spent together in-person building camaraderie at our Home Office and at our branches. We encourage all employees to work hard and demonstrate tenacity within their roles as well as raise their hand for opportunities that can help them grow their skills. However, we haven’t asked, nor do we expect employees to do unpaid work to receive a promotion. We are truly appreciative of you sharing your time and feedback with us. Your review lets us know how we can improve our employee experience. So, thank you and we wish you the very best in your career journey.

Pros

Decent benefits, decent direction. Great people to work with.

Cons

Don’t expect to grow here especially in the IT department. No career growth. Used like a pawn. C-suit are a bunch of narcissists. All white management, all white Board, all white c-suit. Rampant affairs within the c-suit. Very sketchy business practices.

Thank you for your candid thoughts about Canvas. We agree, the people at Canvas are great, being known for our people is what sets us apart in helping our members afford life. We are surprised to hear you’ve felt there weren’t any opportunities to grow at Canvas. Year after year, we’ve celebrated enterprise-wide internal promotions, and last year was no exception as we promoted 91 family members to new roles. We’re proud to offer growth and development opportunities to all of our CanFam, for successful career growth at Canvas we ask that our Canvas family partner with us and take an active role in pursuing their professional aspirations. As Canvas continues to grow, diverse leadership at every level of the organization is instrumental in shaping the path to transforming financial services; we are proud to welcome and work alongside key leaders of multi-race, ethnicity, age, gender, background, diversity of thought, conversation, and ways of doing things. Our industry is highly regulated, sketchy business practices aren’t welcomed here, not to mention our world-class internal audit team helps to ensure the credit union remains compliant in service to our members, family members and community. Family is highly valued at Canvas, that sentiment is shared at every level of our organization, and it’s the reason why we give all of our new full-time family members three weeks of paid time off in their first year, bumping up to four weeks of paid time off after one year of service. We believe maintaining a healthy work-life balance is key to building a thriving family. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Canvas, we wish you the best in your new endeavors.

Pros

They have great co-workers and great benefits for members.

Cons

Bad Management. They emphasize family, but they don't care if you are having personal problems. They put a lot of strain on workers.

Hello and thank you for your feedback. I’m unclear as to what your specific personal problem is, but we are here to help! Here are some options: WorkLife Partnership, a non-profit which offers a free and 100% confidential Navigator to help you manage personal problems. This information can be found on the internal intranet site iCan. WorkLife has been able to help dozens of our Canvas Family through financial, childcare, and mental health challenges. In 2020 we added 14 days of COVID-specific Helping Hands pay and an additional 3 sick days. These additional days on top of three weeks of PTO (four after one year of service) Your leadership team, including your Branch Manager, Retail Director and Chief Operating Officer stand ready to listen and help in any way they can. The People Team also stands ready to help. Don’t hesitate to send me an email at ryanb@canvas.org so we can chat further about your situation. Thank you, Ryan Brown AVP of People & Culture
