Pros

Offices look nice and there are fun events

Cons

Where to start.... 1) As previous reviews have stated the promotion process is an absolute joke. You can work extremely hard and be considered a rockstar on your client, but if you aren’t in the “inner circle” then you will never get recognition, much less a promotion. I’ve never seen a less transparent promotion process. I saw the same people get promoted over and over, and let’s just say they weren’t what you would call “high performers”. 2) I raised serious issues to HR on more than one occasion about senior leaders and their behaviors, and as other reviews mentioned not only was nothing done, but the script was flipped on me like somehow I was the problem.... and they wonder why no one is going to HR?!? 3) During COVID the company was not setup to “weather the storm” and basically told a good majority of employees who had worked their tails off for their hospitality clients that they no longer had positions and if they didn’t find new positions on the other limited projects, that they would be furloughed and eventually laid off. Those who didn’t get furloughed or laid off got their salaries slashed as well. In addition to all that, the poor lack of leadership that led us to be poorly positioned during COVID also then told us that senior leadership was not subject to the furloughs and layoffs. This definitely did not sit well with the employees. To add a cherry on top of all this bad news, they were bringing on interns and full time hires vs. working to retain salaried full time employees who had given several years to their company. I think this shows how much they really cared about their employees and time that was spent building those client relationships and get leadership their promotions and bonuses. As someone who personally experienced this, I felt like it was a total waste of multiple years based on how the company handled this situation.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We are sorry your experience has caused you to doubt CapTech’s core values and question our response to the economic impact from COVID. We strive to cultivate an environment that supports our core values and during this world-wide pandemic, flexibility became an essential part of our improvement efforts. Our priority is to do everything we can to protect the careers of our consultants and offer growth and career advancement, while also being prepared to pivot quickly, and adeptly when things change. We acknowledge that the current global health crisis created an unavoidable slowdown for CapTech in the early months of the year and our response included furloughs and a temporary decrease in salaries. CapTecher’s at all levels were affected and an economic downturn plan was activated which called for leadership to take significant reductions to their compensation as well. Additionally, please know that we have heard the feedback and concerns related to career growth and promotion plans and will be rolling out enhanced guidance later this year. I wish your experience had been better with us. Thank you for your contributions and please feel free to contact me directly at kapostolides@captechconsulting.com if there is anything you would like to discuss. - Katy Apostolides, HR Director

Pros

Very cool office space from an aesthetic end of things (see cons though) Uptown Charlotte location good for after-work activities Fun and supportive peers Some travel opportunities if that's what you're up for

Cons

Space The warp speed turnover and lack of space equates to a hot mess of people sitting at picnic benches in the kitchen or sitting on floors to do work. Compensation and benefits Salaries are paltry and barely within the average for most positions. Worst benefits package I have seen compared to quite literally every other job I've held. Leadership In Charlotte they are either incompetent or play favorites (or both) Lack of feedback Reviews and feedback are a joke. You will get fired with zero warning, zero prior discipline, and no history of mistakes, simply because a senior staff member doesn't like you on a personal level, end of story. I can't tell you how many people, who were excellent employees and put in 50-60 hour work weeks, I've seen this happen to, and then had it subsequently covered up by HR. It's one HUGE high school clique. Insane turnover I've never seen anything like it. It's a revolving door working at hyper speed. Picture a jet turbine. You have GROUPS of new hires quite literally every other week and so many people leaving that you have trouble keeping track. After-hours events It's an unspoken rule that your lack of attendance to these is held against you by senior managers, even if you have legitimate after-work activities that prevent you from going (Dr appointments, picking up your kids, etc). They won't do anything obvious to you about it in the open, but they will make sideways comments and use it as a means of playing favorites with other employees over you. Lack of direction, suppression, and huge bench periods I knew several people there who had been "on the bench" for up to 5 months or so, even when there were positions that had come available in that timeframe. Usually this happened to female developers, while the openings went to the male ones. If you are on a project, you are often not given any specific direction or idea of where you're supposed to insert yourself, and you have a huge chance of being outright prevented from speaking to clients. This was so bad that multiple times projects and presentation materials I completed entirely by myself, had to be presented to clients by someone who was more of a "favorite" and who often could not explain the work well because they were unfamiliar with it. Sabotage Some instances of senior staff purposely changing work someone did or misleading them in doing their work so that they could hold the contrived mistakes against them, especially when they didn't like the person and were looking for a means of getting rid of them. This company and this office in particular, is a terrible place to work. I left because I couldn't see a future for my career here and I still think it's the best decision I've made for my career to this day. Honestly, it's not worth the hassle because you will either be looking for work again in the next few months because you can't stand the place or because you were forced out by the rampant bullying that is enabled at this office.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It is very unfortunate that your time with CapTech was not the CapTech experience we strive for. We do listen and put actions in place to address areas where we can improve based on feedback. For example, leadership is leaning in and working with the Charlotte team to raise awareness, transparency, and directly address concerns raised from recent Glassdoor reviews. One of CapTech’s founding principles is offering a positive work-life balance to our consultants. We are sorry your experience has caused you to doubt our founding principles and to question CapTech’s career advancement and promotional plans. We believe that each member of our CapTech team brings different thoughts, opinions, and experiences and, together, those unique qualities bring value to CapTech and drive better results for the clients. We appreciate your contributions during your career and value your feedback. I would like to make myself available to you if you are interested in talking through these concerns you have raised. Please feel free to contact me directly at kapostolides@captechconsulting.com. - Katy Apostolides, HR Director

Pros

Great happy hours, sexy office space.

Cons

The Space The space is SEXY - corporate high rise, big windows, beer on tap, fancy coffee machines, modern decor.. an absolute wow factor for interviews, happy hours, socializing, and even hosting external events to showcase how trendy and cool the office is, but not built for functionality for those coming to the office to work. With far too few seats, you can often find people sitting in chairs in the lobby and at lunch tables trying to take calls in overly packed common spaces. Who wants to lead a client call next to someone eating a tuna sandwich and 2 college hires talking about their weekend pool parties? Even for the group of practitioners lucky enough to land a desk (new hires are pretty low in the pecking order so don’t expect to have a seat anytime soon), the “open concept” makes it impossible to focus, much less take a client call. If CapTechers are encouraged to be present (in non-COVID times), at least make sure there is somewhere reasonable to accommodate proper working conditions. With not having a desk or opting to work from home, it is easy to fall through the cracks come review time when leadership doesn’t recognize you. Salary/Benefits The salary is very competitive for those starting their careers, but once you are in the door the upward trajectory for career growth and salary increase hardly keeps up with inflation rates. The same small handful of employees seem to get promoted again and again while the rest of the office holds on to visions of promotion grandeur teased every few months during coaching checkins. Unless you are lucky enough to become a pet of someone who carries substantial influence, look for promotions to be based on popularity rather than hard work and rigor. Be prepared to work your laurels off, with little to no recognition of your efforts. After several years of going through the process, I still question the formula they use for promotion, despite leadership providing “transparency” in the process that is really only a happy path for a few shining examples. Leadership Leaders in the office often use the title and position of power to gossip about those outside of the protected inner circle. A male director once encouraged me to flirt with a male client to further his agenda to win more work, and asked for updates several times after to see if I had made any progress. It was an extremely uncomfortable work situation, but I did not feel comfortable escalating to the HR department as many other confidential matters from coworkers had later been shared in office gossip and I feared for any backlash to come from my vulnerable experience. Even my exit interview quickly turned into a gossip session, with no notes documented from my seemingly very relevant concerns and experiences. Although CapTech has a handful of great “leaders,” very few are actually recognized and put into positions to lead with the completely obtuse promotion process. The annual “playbook” is full of hopes, promises and of course core value buzz words, but is never actually applied in any matter that would benefit how the office is managed. I will always appreciate CapTech for the growth opportunities I was afforded and friendships made during my tenure. Most of the group that made the culture so special have since left, with even more departing/furloughed/laid off during COVID. With some serious changes, starting from the top down, CapTech could once again be a place where folks feel valued and supported.
