Tech org slowly being managed to death

Pros

- Generally friendly coworkers - Competitive compensation and benefits (I work in technology) - Interesting projects (though this is dependent on team0 - Decent-ish mission of helping folks achieve their financial dreams through investing - I think this is still a good place for folks in investment and other domains. This used to be a good place for tech as well; however, pressure to deliver more with less has had a great impact on the culture here.

Cons

- Culture is slowly eroding despite the "we're private" line. When I joined, I was sold a vision were layoffs never really occurred and people stay decades. In a few years, my whole reporting line has changed and turn over is really high- I've seen multiple layoffs without good reason (highly competent coworkers being let go), and my whole team, which was highly productive, has mostly turned over since I joined. Capital Group is in a precarious position with the rise of passive investing and generally negative sentiment towards actively managed funds. Yet, they refuse to make investments necessary to innovate and instead rely on endless pointless reorgs to help us be "agile". Beware of promises of "stability" and "long-term" thinking. Even leaders in the firm emphasize that we can't focus on anything long-term and need to just keep delivering "quick wins". - Politics are unavoidable and key to succeeding in the firm. Several senior leaders and engineers who get things done have left, and many remaining in management are just those who can play politics well. - Career advancement is nearly impossible past junior positions. I have heard leaders say "don't expect to be promoted, promotions don't happen here". Multiple leaders have told me to leave because CG doesn't have a anti-poaching policy and leaving is the best way for career advancement at this firm.

Could have done better

Pros

Pay is competitive, great people work here, benefits are great.

Cons

No work life balance. Long hours and the only flexibility the job offered was a great compromise of only having to be in office 1 day a week, which compensated for the long hours. This benefit will go away starting in September and expanding to 3 days in office in January. The job will require you to stare at your cubicle walls for 10-12 hours a day but claim to be building culture and increase collaboration.

Pros

- Structured corporate setting with normal hours - good onboarding program - decent pay increase based on performance - great retirement program

Cons

- You will never be more than an admin, ever. Promotions and growth are nearly impossible. They make it clear what you’re hired for and that you’re intended to stay in your lane and in that role indefinitely. - Say they want change & evolution but cut anyone who voices ideas at the knees. - You’re a second class citizen to others, especially managers. If your manager is an irrational micromanaging hothead , that’s clearly a “you” problem - even if they’ve had a revolving door of admins due to said manager. You need to accept it (ie. Grin & bear it) for they will not try to remedy the toxic manager’s behaviors and actually gaslight you along the way. - They will not take an admin’s side nor will they help you in hostile work environments with fellow colleagues. *Sadly this is not just a local issue but a global one. I knew of reports of office bullying that transpired in other locations, and their “resolution” was blaming or pushing out the victim vs. dealing with the bullies themselves. Seems to be CG’s global policy that squeaky wheels don’t get oil, they get called liars and/or get sacked. If you’re ok being professionally stagnant and not feeling supported by your superiors, especially when you’re being mistreated, this is the place for you.
