Pros

Great Benefits and great fellow employees

Cons

Low pay and long hours. You only make $150 per car and 1$00 if the customer gets the warranty, and half the time the cust. passes on the warranty. Ive seen many instances where the company made over $8k in profit and still only made 150bucks. Quality of life isnt there. You get a weekend off once every 6weeks and many nights you have too work till 9pm.

Pros

Keep in mind I am only writing about working in the strategy group at the Carmax home office. 1. Great intellectual content for people interested in strategy, marketing, statistics/data analysis, operations, etc. 2. Open work environment with a lot of flexibility and independence given to analysts 3. Good work-life balance, with generous vacation policy (our group offered 1 week of vacation time per quarter) 4. Leadership team of the company values the work done by the anlaysts a lot, so analysts get a lot of face-time with C-level people, and the work has very real impact on the company 5. Facilities were very nice, with our own sports fields, basketball courts, squash courts, and a pretty well equipped gym.

Cons

1. The compensation package is relatively low considering the skillset required to do the work. However, there is trade-off in that Richmond is an inexpensive place to live and working hours are very reasonable. 2. Richmond is a great place to raise a family, but not a great place to spend your early and mid-twenties. People looking for a lot of excitement and stimulation in their social life may find their options limited. 3. The location of the office itself is extremely inconvenient. Far from the city proper, located in undeveloped woods and farmland. There aren't even restaurants to go to for lunch, and forget about trying to run errands during the workday.

Pros

pay is pretty good, good products (overall). wouldn't trust buying a used car from another company. this is not to say that carmax is perfect as it relates to vehicle quality (who is?) but if i had to take a chance with buying a vehicle from any company, it would be carmax. overall, carmax is a good company.

Cons

career growth is limited because of the size of the company. lack of high-level management engagement in career pathing. it doesn't exist in the operations side of the business. i spent some time at headquarters and was able to mention my concerns and told that the company was fully aware of the need to have a functional development/training program for operations manager trainees and that the company would have one in place by the end of that year (2008). needless to say, they're still working on it.
