Pros

My small group of IT professionals were nice and treated me well.

Cons

A lack of clear vision and constant direction, toxic leadership or micromanagement, high employee turnover without accountability, and a lack of transparency regarding decisions and finances are all red flags. Poor communication between teams and leadership, inefficient funding (flashy spending over sustainable growth), and a lack of real career growth opportunities further contribute to a negative work environment. Favouritism over merit, a burnout culture fuelled by unrealistic expectations, and a lack of a feedback loop where leadership ignores employee concerns are also significant issues. Inconsistent policies and shifting priorities further erode morale and create a sense of disengagement among teams.

Pros

Your fellow co-workers are highly likely to be fine.

Cons

Engineering Leadership & Culture Engineering leadership does not consistently foster constructive discourse when building solutions. Leadership frequently appears resistant to criticism or alternative viewpoints, even when contradicted by objective logic and performance data. This behavior is especially noticeable concerning internal work processes, which often feel cumbersome and introduce unnecessary friction to substantive work, negatively impacting overall productivity. The general technical direction is often lacking. Leadership demonstrates a significant gap in technical knowledge required to set a forward-looking strategy or provide informed guidance. This lack of technical oversight means engineers are frequently managing and working around architectural debt, which hinders modernization efforts. Career Growth and Recognition Criticism, even if constructive and data-driven, is often met with marginalization. This may manifest as being excluded from crucial decision-making meetings where direct expertise is required. We have observed patterns where colleagues are promoted into management roles following instances of constructive criticism being raised, effectively creating a new layer between the engineering team and senior leadership. When this happens, key technical input is often lost or diluted during the decision-making process, leading to subsequent operational and strategic confusion. Career advancement and compensation adjustments often seem to hinge on subjective factors related to personal alignment with leadership, rather than on the measurable quality, impact, or mission-criticality of an individual's work. Summary of Cons: • Technology Backwater: The environment is characterized by an unwillingness to invest in modernization, preferring to implement temporary fixes on outdated technology. • Compensation: Pay rates are perceived to be significantly below the current market rate for similar roles and experience. • Decision-Making: A culture of implementing decisions that appear to contradict data or objective technical reasoning. • Professional Growth: Promotions and salary increases often appear subjective, disconnected from proven performance metrics. For engineers who value objective reasoning, data-driven decision-making, and organizational efficiency, this environment presents significant challenges.
