Poisonous Corporate Culture

Pros

Decent pay; discount to the website

Cons

Terrible culture and work-life balance. The hours are long, with no clear strategy and constantly shifting priorities. If you push back and reduce hours, the time you do spend at work will be stressful. The attitude at Chewy is very much "everything is urgent", which quickly leads to burnout and employee apathy. The fringe benefits (healthcare, etc.) are very expensive compared to other companies of this size. No bonuses, or employee stock purchase plan. If you're lucky enough to get a signing bonus, it comes with a ridiculous 2-year claw-back.

Pros

Chewy overpays candidates in order to compete with other companies with better cultures.

Cons

It appears that senior managers and directors consider overpayment of employees as a justification to perpetuate a toxic culture. Given our business, it is astonishing how poor our ratings are across indeed, Glassdoor etc. Customers aren't terribly happy about our business model. Employees aren't terribly happy about our culture. I hate throwing a team under the bus, but our technical recruitment team is the worst I have ever worked with. They are difficult to deal with, and they over run the entire hiring process. It is extremely difficult to build an effective team and an effective organization based on the way they approach recruitment.

Fun place to work

Pros

* The company has a great reputation. It's nice to work somewhere that people genuinely LOVE. * There's lots of growth. New faces and plenty of opportunities to move upward and laterally. Almost every team has new positions. * We have some really exciting technical challenges to work on. New technology, strong investment in systems and architecture. Tech teams are given a lot of leeway to make decisions independently. * The company is actively making changes to improve leadership, collaboration, and culture. * Work life balance is what you make of it. (this can be a pro or a con) If you want to get ahead here fast, you can put in as much extra time and effort as you want. It will be noticed and appreciated. * Working from home is a standard in Engineering. Our teams regularly have at least a couple of people working remotely almost every day.

Cons

* The transition between startup and large company is hard and Chewy is no exception. The legacy monolith structure is brittle and requires a lot of terrible processes and manual effort just to "keep the lights on," let alone add big features. * There's more red tape to get things done than there ought to be due to the fragility of the systems and organization of the teams which creates too much cross-functional dependencies to get things done. * Decisions are still often made with emotion and squeaky wheels rather than with data and a scientific approach. This is a problem from the very top all the way to the very bottom. This is sloooowly starting to change, but it can be frustrating when important projects and thoughtfully orchestrated roadmaps are derailed by the latest fire or "must have feature." * Chewy's compensation and reward structure could use some updates to be more competitive.
