1. I spent less than 2 hours in the classroom and was forced to lead a "study hall" where students played games on laptops and automatically received an A. I felt like a babysitter 2. After tax, my take home pay was $900. All CY members qualify for food stamps & management will try to tell you its a "benefit" 3. Teachers actively were hostile and did not want City Year at the school 4. Manager hardly showed up to work and when he did he left early. Yet, CY members are expected to work 10 hrs a day. 5. The "professional development" days were being told what a resume was.. nothing useful 6. Members at a nearby school were made to teach solo.. which is not allowed and should not happen.

- stipend - you make less than minimum wage - if you are on your own financially, do not do city year - you have no control to what school/area you are assigned - 10 hour service days that average 7:30 am - 5:15 pm usually with a 30 min commute - City Year has no power or leverage within the school administration. If your principle wants your team to do something - you have no choice. - City Year culture is full of weird and cringe practices that can make it resemble a cult - you have to wear a uniform every single day - city year polo, black pants, and black shoes - work is mentally and emotionally taxing and the only benefit it that you are serving others - would not recommend if you need to make money or do not have a passion to serve others or go into education
