Pros
Clark Associates is a solid, growing company and an industry leader (one of the largest in the country). They reward results and hard work, and there is ample opportunity for people interested in advancing and building a career. Buying at Clark is fast paced, dynamic, and provides hands-on-experience learning about the foodservice industry and supply chain. Clark’s unique approach to procurement gives buyers responsibilities you won’t find in similar positions at other companies, specifically with how they are given the freedom to manage the life cycle of their products/categories in nearly every aspect. It’s one of the aspects of the job I enjoy the most. Employees are encouraged to ask questions and think outside the box. They are always looking for ways to improve how things are done and the worst answer to ever give is: “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
Buyers are expected to take responsibility for their own work, vendors, and items; and they aren’t micromanaged. One’s successes are a direct result of the time and hard work put in, and mistakes are viewed as an opportunity to learn and develop professionally. Management gives straightforward and specific feedback. They make a concerted effort to bring in and develop first-class employees, and it shows as you interact with coworkers. More than any other job I’ve worked before the quality of the other employees in the department is topnotch. It’s refreshing to work with others who are so driven to succeed and who are pulling their own weight (and sometimes more). Management does a good job of building teams where employees are paired with others who offset the weaknesses and compliment the strengths of the others in the team. The management and the other buyers are more than happy to share their insight as well as give advice when you have questions (whether it is just general knowledge or about strategy). Senior management continues to develop the department as we grow and are outlining new positions, roles, and responsibilities that will better strengthen the company’s position in the industry as well as provide new advancement opportunities for employees.
They have an excellent 401k program. They have a gym available for employees with showers and locker rooms, they offer a fair benefits package, and give paid time off. It’s also a pretty flexible work schedule.
Cons
It can be difficult to handle the fast pace. Clark is growing so quickly that there is too much to do and not enough time in the day, which can be overwhelming at times. But as they continue to hire quality candidates I expect this will become less of an issue.
There is a really steep learning curve at first, and it can be a challenge to keep up initially.
