Clayco - A good, fair place

Pros

It is a great company that really promotes a good corporate environment. The job is interesting, energetic, and the people are very good to work with. The projects are exciting and you get to do a variety of jobs. They are very envouraging of pursuing your own interested within the company and innovation. The co-workers are very upbeat and committed to their job so rarely do you have problems with poor performance within a division or group. Recently, there have been many layoffs due to the poor economy. All in all, it is a great place to start a career. I am not sure if it has too much room for mobility however.

Cons

The major downside of Clayco was definitely in communication. There are a number of different Clayco groups and sometimes they did poor jobs of communicating with one another, especially in terms of innovations or failures. There was also a disconnect between senior management and lower employees. There was a disconnect between the Clayco philosophy of openness and the reality of the job. On another note, the hours can be very difficult. Clayco subscribes very much to the work hard play hard mentality. While the time off and events are certainly nice and fun, the hours can be horrendous if difficulties in projects arise.

Pros

Competitive salary, does their best to train employees, some* really great people

Cons

Being onsite can be brutal. Their slogan is "the job is the boss" so work/life balance is out the window. During my interview I was told I would be on a job that was within 15 minutes of my house, right when I started they put me on one over an hour away, I had no say in it. I was told hours were "normal" and Saturdays were limited - I consistently was required to work 12 hours a day "on top of an hour+ commute both ways) and every 3rd Saturday, I felt like I didn't have any time to myself or my family and if I spoke out about it, I was essentially told "too bad, most people get over it eventually". Outdated software, PMWeb is the most unnecessarily complicated software in construction, just switch to Procore. An insane amount of micromanagement from corporate. You cannot complete any tasks without checking with 3-5 people first.

The construction industry is demanding, often includes long days, and occasional weekends to support the team. There is often a learning curve, training, and time commitments and getting people up to speed on how we do things, especially through your first project. Often times, owners and priorities dictate changing needs and require project reassignment, which is typical in this industry.
