Pros

Showed up a day before my interview to check out the company and showroom. Asked for Steve/Lori Newman and they were kind enough to give me a hour of their time which was completely unexpected. I also got a chance to meet one-on-one with Brian Nemeth, their General Manager, who layed out the sales process and the extensive training they provide to get new Designers up and running quickly. My conversation with Steve and Lori revealed very seasoned and competent Franchisee's who are looking to double the size of their business by hiring equally successful sales, installation, support, and management people. I was VERY IMPRESSED with Steve and Lori and their commitment to quality installations for customers. I was also amazed with the range or products they are now involved in. Clearly Steve was correct that the company name may be too narrow and doesn't express the full capabilities of the firm...my guess is that one day the name may be updated to include everything they do from closets to Motor Trend Garage upgrades, to home offices, mudrooms, laundry rooms, entertainment centers, media rooms, etc. The way Steve explains it, the Closet Factory is involved in home and office storage systems and all that that encompasses. THE KEY: My sense is that these are really good people who are also very capable managers as well as Franchisee's, who invite other capable professionals to align themselves with a solid company, providing very high quality products, and a unique commitment to customers. After all, as they explained to me, a large percentage of their sales production is generated from repeat customers...customers who have become "clients" and have forged a relationship with the "people" at The Closet Factory. From these client relationships come 100's of referrals to friends, families, and co-workers. That impressed me too...when much of your business comes from referrals you know that you must be doing things really right!

Cons

Lots of driving (duh...this is "in-home" sales)... but Steve and Lori make it really easy to earn gas cards which you can earn every single day.

Pros

Flexible hours since you can schedule and reschedule your own appointments. Quality of products are very good. Installers do a very good job. You are given leads. Good job for a part timer or retiree.

Cons

You are treated like a subcontractor although you are an employee. You have to supply your own phone, laptop and everything else needed to be a designer. You are given a compensation schedule, then heavily encouraged to discount so that you can never reach the top commission level, which is not high to begin with. You are not given anything for gas/car allowance or your time. You need to see every customer at least twice so that is your time and gas you are laying out for someone else's business. You are lied to by management until you accept the job and find out the truth about everything. You are not paid until the vendor pays the company even though you have done the work and the job was installed. This could be months later. The company does not think it should bear the cost of doing business and instead passes that burden on to the employee.
