Pros

There are plenty of interesting problems to solve. The company is growing quickly which means there are opportunities to decide how things will be done, to be part of an exciting phase in the company's life-cycle, and who knows what the future will bring in terms of IPOs, etc. The people I work with are smart, engaged, friendly, and they have a focus on getting stuff done. Big data technology is pretty cutting edge, and the tools and methodologies we're using will look good on my resume.

Cons

It's unlikely that non-technical friends will have direct experience with the technology (unlike some parts of places like Apple, Google, or Facebook). Cloudera uses an open floor plan which is very popular these days, but I miss the quiet of the offices I had in days gone by. There's pressure to deliver features to the market, beating competitors, which is reasonable, but sometimes the planning of what we will do doesn't seem to match what is practical to do in the time available; we make it work, but I'd like to be able to take a bit more time to do even better work.

Pros

- Many of the company's products are distributed by nature. If you want to learn about distributed systems and the challenges inherent in building them, this is the place to be. - Due to the sheer breadth of the product suite, there are opportunities to work in very different kinds of programming environments. - Company culture emphasizes transparency and initiative. This is echoed from the top. - The CEO and executive staff know what they're doing and inspire confidence in the rest of the employees. - The engineering organization was physically distributed from very early on. Telecommuting happens often and is valued, and many teams are accustomed to using collaboration software to be more productive. - The company is in a great market: there is much opportunity and a lot of room to grow.

Cons

- The engineering team hasn't done a great job in career advancement. If you want more responsibility and visibility, you have to work at it yourself. This is starting to change, but it's still slow going. - You're not going to find the Google/Facebook level of perks and benefits here.

Pros

The people make this place amazing, at all levels of the company. A deep sense of team work and openness.

Cons

Being the leader in a market means everyone else is aiming for you.
