Pros

- 2x match on 403B contributions up to 5% (you contribute 5, they contribute 10) - Talent has job security - Potential - Not difficult work - Effort to modernize practices & culture

Cons

- Red tape. - Pseudo startup environment(s) with highly distributed, but isolated teams, stakeholders, & information, often with duplicate and/or competing goals and objectives. - Growth potential is often unrealized because of competing job security incentives, poor resource planning/utilization, and lack of maturity in leadership in the engineering organizations. - Boring work + red tape + lack of project management and maturity/direction leads to turnover and burnout. - Career development track emphasizes selling over actual contributions and development. Very little accountability. - Talent leaves after wading through backwaters. - Culture bias. - Would not advise as a place to learn best practices, though they are improving, I think.

Pros

I really love the mission of the College Board. I think that often times when employees are deep in the weeds of the work, it's difficult to remember that students are on the other side of the amazing work that everyone is committed to. The culture in the office was great- the people who work at the College Board alone is a reason to work there! Remote work has been a little different but the culture has stayed in tact for the most part.

Cons

A couple of things I've noticed- 1) the College Board operates like a collection of smaller companies. Each individual department runs the operation differently and with different leadership styles, largely divided up by product. This is good and bad because if you move departments, you get a fresh perspective and get to work on a completely different product. However the downside is lack of consistency. 2) the salaries start off really competitive when you first come to work there but they don't stay competitive.

Pros

Leadership down the rank and file all genuinely want to improve American education Most employees are collaborative, fun, and really smart Pay is competitive, with great benefits

Cons

While they may be generally polite and desire to appear reflective, multiple senior leaders have problematic blind spots that regularly result in arbitrary actions, expensive mistakes, and typical playing favorites/office politics presented as evidence-based decisions. As a result, staff walk on eggshells trying to avoid accidentally triggering volatility and hold their breath for what sudden change may be thrown their way at any minute. Also, the organization works some teams like dogs. It is an unwritten assumption that work-life balance has to go out the window when there are emergency student needs (e.g., COVID supports for colleges, high schools). The desire to want to help is admirable, but it is certainly a shoot first, ask questions about the human cost to staff later (if at all) approach.

Thank you for your feedback and candor. We know that flexibility and balance are essential to our staff, particularly since the pandemic; we're sorry that wasn't your experience. Our leadership values and listens to feedback from staff and will continue to look for new channels for two-way communication. Ben Jay, Talent Acquisition Team (bjay@collegeboard.org)
