Pros

The organization is teeming with good people who do good work. Everyone you work with is really nice. The organization is important and people have a strong sense of mission.

Cons

Oh boy. It's just a horrible place to work if you end up in the wrong department. Jim. Jim is just as bad as everyone says he is. Everyone knows that Glass Door is teeming with reviews about Jim, and nobody knows what to do about it. But the realest thing I want to say is: Some of the other reviewers have written about how your experience at Common Sense depends a lot based on what team or department you join. I wish I had understood this better before taking a job at Common Sense. If you join a good and functioning and stable team (Editorial, Education), you'll have a great experience and you'll have a great job for a long time. If you join a chaotic team with high turnover (Marketing, Business Development, and anything directly attached to Jim are the three that come to mind here), you'll probably regret ever joining and look for a new job really quickly just as other people have done in the past. In all, it can just be a very unprofessional place to work. Do your research before agreeing to anything.

Pros

The people are kind and very accommodating in terms of sick leave/vacation days

Cons

Although they stress tolerance, I didn’t feel comfortable enough to express on opposing, controversial opinion

Amazing, dedicated people pulled in too many directions

Pros

You can't find a more dedicated group of people working toward a mission, and many departments are flexible in terms of work-life balance. HR has worked hard to make the salaries and benefits competitive in a tough market, despite the org being a nonprofit.

Cons

There are often too many initiatives, too many decisions made by senior leadership that don't seem to benefit the organization, and conflicts of ideas. The CEO means well but isn't a strong listener, often contradicts the main messages of the organization, doesn't try to build relationships with most employees (or learn their names/functions), and is difficult to work with, as evidenced by the high turn-over in positions that are in direct contact with him.
