Cult of Constant Chaos

Pros

The marketing behind the brand is appealing.

Cons

Constant state of chaos. Everything is always changing—staff is moved around so frequently it’s hard to know who to contact. While they seem to provide great tools, it’s really just smoke and mirrors as they simply bandaged together multiple independent companies, negotiated a bulk discount for themselves and then up charge you in addition to the huge split they take for none of their effort. They lure you in with incentives and high splits but don’t tell you they’ll lower your split after the first year. If you try to leave, once you see it’s nothing more than smoke and mirrors, they use contract claw backs and penalties to make it impossible for your business to survive the move. Beware of the contract that says they can change any of the terms at any time.

Pros

The company as a whole is incredibly fast paced; don't like your current role? It'll fundamentally change within a month! Lots of opportunity to learn tons of skills you may not ordinarily touch as a marketer on the fly, in an industry that doesn't have a lot of dedicated marketing people.

Cons

Working in the marketing department at Compass means working as an assistant to hundreds of agents at once. There is little organizational structure, and that leads to miscommunication at all levels. As a member of the marketing department, there were decisions being made by outside parties that directly affected my own work, without any advance notice or input. Couple that with an overwhelming workload due to poor staffing, and it's not hard to see why turnover at this company is so high. Additionally, one of the company tenets is "move fast," but that in fact leads to nothing but sloppy work and overextended employees. You're encouraged to work as quickly as possible on everything at once, regularly launching initiatives and products that are not ready for primetime, resulting in a sloppy final product and unhappy agents.

Not all it's cracked up to be

Pros

Great benefits, free lunch, flexible work/ life balance

Cons

The leadership team is sneaky and not transparent. Instead of laying people off after a huge surge of over hiring they instead invoked voluntary departure through their review process by providing no raises or bonuses to employees. Massive amounts of employees leaving and not opening up headcount to replace them. People management training nonexistant, people managers with no experience in charge of your career path, career maps are fake, promotions given based off personal relationships, not actual achievements, HR team doesn't take feedback from frustrated employees seriously and is never actioned on. Agents are priority and employees are overworked and abused by agents but CEO + leadership will tell you to do everything to make the agents happy.
