Pros

The brand offers networking opportunities, passionate creatives across departments, and a prestigious name for your resume.

Cons

In some meetings, certain c-suite executives have used the term “exploit” when referring to specific subcultural and ethnic groups. Additionally, there is a noticeable lack of diversity in executive roles, particularly among Black employees. This is significant from both a cultural and business perspective: Black culture, and the influence of hip hop in particular, has been a foundational element in the company—without it, neither Ecko Unltd. nor its offshoot, Complex, would have existed. (And even if they had, would they have been as cool? Probably not.) From a business standpoint, a leadership team with limited demographic and socio-economic diversity may face challenges in understanding and sevicing the next generation's POV. Recruiting external candidates from your limited social circle rather than developing internal talent or cultivating raw talent restricts the infusion of fresh perspectives and multicultural marketing expertise.

A mess

Pros

You get to put on you resume that you worked at Complex.

Cons

They misunderstand their audience, and also misunderstand their place in the context of new media. Their profits are short term money grabs and not sustainable long term. Poor pay for what they ask of you as well. My salary went up 250% within a year of leaving. Place keeps getting passed around, they're riding the coat tails of a bygone era. Clear that a lot of the folks running the place now just don't understand where the culture has gone, nor how to run a profitable media business in 2024.

A Great Place To Start Your Career

Pros

It's a fun workplace for pop culture lovers, particularly for anyone that's passionate about hip-hop.

Cons

Despite how hard you work, it seems like promotions never come to light. There's generally an unclear career path for young employees there. Even if one's role changes over several years, with more responsibilities expected, a promotion does not come to the table. There're also constants shifts in strategy that are difficult to balance while being expected to produce high-quality work.
