Pros

Came to work at Conde for the all-star talent and commitment to good work

Cons

- Magazines have become “brands.” - All design departments work on one floor, flattening the personality of each individual title and discouraging diversity. It also disrupts the collaborative relationship with Edit staff that’s crucial for the best work. - Editorial designers are given branding and advertising assignments with no increase in salary (and little appreciation). Advertising designers typically make significantly more than editorial designers: now everyone does both for the same low price. - Many layoffs, company appears unstable. Little transparency. Changes are made with no consideration for their impact on lower and middle staff. Internal messaging does not inspire confidence. - Rumors and cattiness abound, which is pretty pathetic. Little direct communication. Mostly uninspiring.

Pros

The building is beautiful, and I met some great people on my team. The view from the lunchroom was incredible, you can see the Statue of Liberty from a distance and the whole NYC skyline. The lunchroom had every kind of food you could possibly imagine and more.

Cons

Things were very unorganized and confusing. The processes would never match up with what was actually taught. Do not accept this job if you are looking for a 9-5 position, if you left at 6 you would get dirty looks (even though normal business hours were supposed to be until 5:30). Some people that worked there were very catty and condescending.

Pros

Grandiose office at WTC. Free snacks in the kitchen. Free lunches on occasion. Benefits are pretty sweet despite paying salaries that are 20% lower than the industry standard. Flexible WFH option.

Cons

Management are usually a bunch of talking heads who as another reviewer mentioned are overpaid and don't understand the business. Two years is somewhat standard for a promotion for some divisions but playing office politics is the name of the game. One other thing, if you don't follow the "Condé dress code" you can pretty much expect to be ostracized. Pay scales are not structured anywhere except for the tech side. Many of my co-workers who are extremely talented and were severely underpaid left CN for better companies due to this. CN still clings to this idea that the prestige of working for them beats equitable pay. CN needs to wake up and realize it's in a dying industry and there are other companies that are eating their lunch with smarter and more innovative strategies/technology.
