Pros

Good company if you are union.

Cons

I would highly recommend avoiding this company if you have an engineering/STEM background and you want to do real engineering work. Since Control Air is a contractor, the bulk of the work they do involves managing, fabricating, and supplying materials and labor for construction projects. There is no engineering design work done at the company. The pay is very mediocre compared to other companies in the area, especially given the high CoL. If you have the desire to apply your STEM background to solve real problems and be reimbursed at a respectable rate, then avoid Control Air and look somewhere else.

Pros

Base pay is ok, employees are paid weekly, building is nice and new, workspace is large and comfortable for most employees/departments, plenty of parking.

Cons

Very expensive health insurance (while the employee is basically free it costs about $400 a week for spouse and children for HMO insurance - or $240 a week for Kaiser for spouse and children), they say it is an employee owned company but the original owners are still very much in charge of the company, very rigid work schedules – employees must work 8-5 and take a 1 hour lunch break at 12 (but if you have an issue they will make accommodations), everyone has to wear chip lanyards to swipe in and out of the building so they can keep track of everyone’s time, all employees are hourly unless they have direct reports, for the first 3 months you are not allowed to take sick time, for the first year employees start at one weeks’ vacation which starts accruing after 3 months; then from the 2nd year onward it is 2 weeks. Training is not good, they expect new employees to figure out a lot for themselves, but then get mad if things don’t get done quickly/efficiently.

Great company to use as a stepping stone, but that’s it.

Pros

Great company to start with getting into the industry. Learn a lot by experience within the company. Learn real world knowledge of HVAC systems, engineering and estimation.

Cons

Growth can be quite difficult depending on who is the head of your department. Unless you’re tied into the family in someway you’ll have to fight for growth. Pay is at the light side at first until you move up to a higher position, which unfortunately can take quite some time. Turn around rate for employees is pretty high. They hire people that have no interest in that department for example estimating, or pre-construction but have a mechanical engineering degree and try to persuade them that they will have opportunities to move to their engineering firm which is rare.
