Pros

Incredible work life balance. This is because of a singular focus on an industry event for the entirety of the year.

Cons

It's pretty obvious things are going off the rails when a company (not just this one) creates an influx of fake 5 star reviews by asking their employees to write GD reviews, and things are no different here. They’re pretty easy to spot. Just look at the “Con” sections that feature a single sentence or phrase. If you have good work experience, you likely requested a salary of X but where told your pay band maxes out at Y, far below what you’re worth. You were likely told that the bonus will more than make up for it, since it is “above 100%” for Z number of years in a row. Don’t forget the bonus is taxed at 33% and the payout is entirely determined by your manager who will likely change within a year. You will be lucky if any of your managers have a software background, or management training of any sort. This message is for those who are doing their DD and determining whether or not to take the below-market-rate for the position CA just offered you. Ask yourself these questions. I will not answer them for you, but you should know the answer before you sign on here: Nearly all of the products are software products. Are the majority of the developers located in the US, or India? What is the ratio? What is the employee turnover like in Engineering? Product? Design? Sales? Customer success? Why? Have you seen a live demo of the product (even if it is on YouTube) you'll be working on? Does it look modern? When was it last updated? Is the tech stack of the product you're working on relatively new? Who makes the decisions for what is included in the software you build? Do they have a software background? Was the product developed in house, or is it the result of an acquisition? What has been updated since the acquisition? For the team you'll be joining: how many people have left within the last year? Last 6 months? Last month? Has the director, manager, or VP you'll be reporting into ever built/grown anything worthwhile in their career? How long ago was that? Do they have any stops at any noteworthy companies? Release notes for software are usually public. What do the release notes for the product you'll be working on look like? What do the App Store reviews look like? How often will you have one on one time with your VP? Would you consider the org you'll be joining modern-ish and flat-ish, or more 1970's style top-down?

Formerly great company convulsing towards self destruction

Pros

Designed 20 years ago to be an East Coast Startup for Grownups, with smart people, nice culture and good benefits (including a pension).

Cons

Growth through absorption of diverse companies has led to inimical factions that cannot be integrated into a federated business model (e.g. Dealertrack's culture of heavy handed direction and compliance orientation fits poorly with units like Autotrader). Wholesale ouster of long time CTO and all levels of technical leadership creating tactical rather than strategic focus for most teams. Consolidation of all power in Vermont with Dealer.com execs marginalizing other offices, including corporate headquarters in Atlanta, to obsolescence. End of pension system and cycles of layoffs make this an environment for new grads rather than experienced professionals.

Pros

Cox Automotive is one of the divisions reporting into Cox Enterprises, a fourth generation privately held family run company. There is a real difference when you work for a private company. They can make long term decisions that are the right thing to do regardless of the stock market's response. I've been with the company 12 years now and can't imagine working anywhere else.

Cons

If you don't like change, this might not be the right time for you to join the auto industry. Good for me, I love it.
