Great place to work. But not perfect.

Pros

• Forward thinking business philosophy. • Great people. • Autonomy to accomplish tasks. • Benefits and office perks are great. • Company doesn't coddle the engineering team, unlike many Bay Area employers.

Cons

• Recent churn in engineering. Company is transitioning a large portion of its engineering team to a recently acquired operation in Moldova. • Layoffs could have been handled better - they were presented as purely a redundancy issue - in fact, quite a few were for performance and culture issues. Witness many of the complaints on this site. No one likes to be told weren't good at their job, or that they stirred the pot too often.

Pros

Good if you are in Moldova until this cow runs out of milk

Cons

1. All project, process are miss managed. Very poor upper management. 2. Product leadership expects you to stay extra time to meet their deadlines while 90% of your team gets fired and replaced by rooky developers from Moldova. 3. Product team seems to think they know what they are doing even interfering in engineering decisions. 4. Main product is broken and upper management has not been able to fix it in the past 3 months.

Pros

In short, there are still a few smart, humble, passionate people at Crunchyroll/Ellation despite the turmoil at the company. Free lunch and dinner four days a week, a very nice office and opportunities to have a big impact on the anime industry.

Cons

"Crunchyroll" is not a separate company. It's a product that the company Ellation maintains. The business teams for Crunchyroll are somewhat separated (though they're still in the same office) but engineering and many other departments are all part of Ellation proper. Read the Glassdoor reviews for Ellation. They don't bode very well. Petty politics and sabotage have resulted in layoffs for some of the most senior and well-respected engineers, as part of the company "growing" by buying up its outsourcing partner (whose CEO was conveniently ALSO the "interim CTO" of Ellation at the time). Now the rest of the senior engineers and lots of other people are leaving. There's a huge amount of distrust between ground-level employees and management.
