Pros

Hmmm, steady paycheck, PTO, work/life balance is pretty good.

Cons

This company used to feel like family to me. Then something happened a couple of years ago. Cannot put my finger on it, but there has been a change in management, buildings and policies. Morale has hit its all-time low for this company due to spontaneous layoffs (all the Project Managers were let go) causing everyone to question if they were next on the chopping block. Of course this spawned rumors no one wanted to talk about. Further demoralization came when my manager would single out and degrade others during team meetings and gave the blanket statement "you are all replaceable". Not a good team building tactic in my book. Sure some were replaced, but it did take a year or more to find someone. The vision of the company was never fully communicated. Project requirements would change at the last minute requiring rewrites to entire platforms so they can look pretty, but confuse the end users. Since the real IP is the database and the core, DAT needs to invest more into high-availability so these single systems will not bring the business to a halt. Record profits never find there way past shareholders or upper management. A bonus or profit-sharing system (like back in the good 'ol Jubitz days) would be an nice incentive for potential recruits.

DAT Solutions Response

Former Employee, Thank you for sharing this feedback. As a member of the leadership team, I am very interested in feedback from current and former employees as an opportunity to learn what's working and where we have room for growth. From this review, it certainly sounds like a disappointing experience for you and I have shared this review with my team and senior leadership so we can utilize this feedback to improve the experience of our employees. DAT launched an IT transformation initiative in 2016 in order to better align its delivery capabilities to the growing expectations and demand of its customer base. There have been growing pains across the organization as we introduce new processes, technologies, roles and responsibilities and we've made every effort to ensure our staff are prepared to grow along with us...though this was clearly not your experience. We have some work to do here, and everyone in a leadership role understands the criticality of our employees' experiences. This year we launched an employee engagement program which includes employee focus groups, mentorship programs, individual development plans, and enhanced leadership training. We appreciate and encourage feedback and thank you again for sharing your experience at DAT. Greg Tomczyk, Director Systems Operations

Collaborative Environment

Pros

DAT is a small software development company that services the trucking industry. Think Match.com but for truckers and shippers. While DAT has been around for 40 years, it's got a small company feel and they really treat their employees like people and not a number. I've worked for large companies and working at DAT has been refreshing. The working environment is open with very few offices. Every workstation utilizes dual monitors and adjustable height desks to enhance productivity. The executive staff is approachable and if you like working for a company where your voice can be heard, DAT is the place. What makes DAT special are the frequent social events that are hosted nearly every week. Company paid lunches delivered by rotating food trucks, social events of every type including homemade breakfasts, full hot lunches, ice cream socials and after-hours beer and wine events. These social events foster a collaborative environment through interaction with people you don't normally work with, creating a vibrant team spirit across the organization.

Cons

Not many companies can boast double-digit growth in revenue, over the last two years, but that is exactly what DAT has been experiencing. So DAT is adding significant staff to their development, product and QA teams. As a result, DAT is experiencing growing pains that you would expect to see at any company where substantial growth is taking place. This includes a fair amount of uncertainty at how legacy products will change, how new initiatives will evolve and how teams will be allocated. While DAT offers a very comprehensive benefits package, medical co-pays and deductibles are higher than what you would expect to see at comparable companies in the Portland metro area.

Toxic Management

Pros

The work was interesting. I worked with some awesome, really smart people, and developed some genuinely great relationships with many colleagues. I learned a lot and expanded my professional capabilities.

Cons

Unfortunately, most of the smart people I worked with have either been laid off, forced out, or are currently trying to leave. In a relatively short time, DAT went from one of the best places I've worked, to the worst place I've ever worked hands down — mostly due to the promotion and hiring of toxic, unqualified product management.
