Most stressful job I've had

Pros

I worked with nice and supportive people for the most part. Majority of the people knew what they were talking about. Some of them were excellent in their fields which was very helpful for my personal growth. The work is interesting and challenging. There were many opportunities to learn new things.

Cons

I think management is failing their employees tremendously. They laid off a lot of engineers which meant the rest would need to pick up the slack. But now they are trying to hire again which is hilarious. This is the reason I'm writing this review. My team was the Pulse team and it was the most stressful experience I've had in my career. The codebase is a mess. Some things that I thought were standard practice are not being followed like separating domain models for data, service and controller layers. Nobody writes tests at all. As a result the application breaks all the time and you as a developer have to put out fires constantly. There is no time to refactor anything, nobody works on design or architecture. Everything is done in the dirtiest and fastest way possible, yielding neither a stable application nor any sense of satisfaction from a job well done. Everybody is overworked and stressed. I made it a point to log off at 5 everyday but some colleagues would work overtime and I don't think they were compensated for that. Priorities would change hour to hour. We would get pinged all throughout the day, which was very stressful for me. Things would be added to the sprint on the fly depending on how important the product manager thought them to be and you would need to abandon the task you were working on to switch to what he wants you to do. The upper management reminds me of tech bros that believe in all the ai hype without knowing how these technologies work. They are the kind of people who would do whatever they can to increase profits and not care about the human cost of their decisions. I won't write my thoughts about them here to keep it respectful. If you're thinking about applying or accepting an offer here know that it's not the worst company by any means but it's very stressful to work here and you probably don't have job security because the upper management doesn't care about the employees.

Management is a problem

Pros

The team is composed of friendly and supportive members who are passionate about their work and highly motivated to grow. Compensation for certain roles is competitive and aligned with market standards. The company offers a standard benefits package typical for the region. As an international organization with a strong brand name in the industry, it provides a reputable and professional environment.

Cons

The founders tend to make impulsive decisions, which negatively impact the rest of the business. Their approach lacks pragmatism, and they often fail to take responsibility for the consequences of their actions. They exhibit a lack of trust in their managers, maintaining tight control over their decisions. Their overall strategy appears to be heavily influenced by copying the ways of the previous company they have been at and a book by Elon Musk they read. Both upper and lower management lack diversity, which has fostered an environment characterized by toxic masculinity and power struggles, ultimately leaving employees to bear the consequences of these dynamics. The company lacks a genuine culture. While there are stated values, no one seems to remember or apply them in practice. The compensation structure is inconsistent and poorly designed. Depending on your role and location, you may find yourself fairly compensated or significantly underpaid. Transparency and communication are ongoing issues. While these may function to some degree within the office, the lack of communication on an international level often leaves employees blindsided by unshared updates or decisions. The company is heavily focused on in-office presence, which has caused significant dissatisfaction among the workforce.
