Pros

The travel benefits have always been a big pro in working for a airline. You are on a standby basis when traveling on a free pass. These days you are bumped more often then not trying to get somewhere due to the airlines overselling seats. It may take you a couple days to get somewhere. Seeing the world and getting paid while doing it. They fly to almost every country in the world.

Cons

Minimum staff on all airplanes compared to other airlines with more staffing. Very physically challenging job. Quite often 20+ Hour work days. 4-5 hours of sleep on layovers. Lifting passenger luggage into overhead bins and then closing them takes it toll on your back over the years. A lot of OJI's with this job working with very heavy equipment. They fight you every step of the way on OJI's and disability insurance you pay for. Only airline that FA's are non Union . Must work all holidays for first 5+ yrs. No appreciation from management on the job the FA's do. You are dealing with very angry passengers on a day to day basis and expected to solve many problems you have no control over. Such as cancelled or delayed flights, don't like the meal served, don't like their seats, no leg room, drunk and sometimes violent passengers. Things can change at a moments notice and you get home 1-3 days later then expected. Constantly told we are responsible for great customer service and not given the proper staffing to do it.

Pros

I worked for Delta 6 years and I really enjoyed the benefits and certain events. Meaning pretty good health insurance, 401k match AND most importantly, flight benefits which come with some drawbacks (domestic flights are trouble, better to buy a ticket, however for international it can be very valuable). I got some rules of thumb, join Delta corporate if you want to travel or if your plan is to get Delta on your resume and then get out in couple years after you enjoy traveling the world. Also if you’re not the youngest anymore meaning you really don’t have the drive and passion anymore about your profession, you don’t want to improve things, you don’t want to learn anything new and just want to sit back and enjoy the boring life until retirement then Delta is for you.

Cons

I have lot of downsides that I noticed during my years in Delta: 1) If you want to learn new technologies and be innovative, this is not a company for you (very old tech with early 2000ish habits) - they just pretend to be the best 2) people get promoted into management positions without an actual skill for the job, just because they were in the company for long time and “started from the bottom” 3) frankly, Delta is a cult - act happy, be positive, talk only great things about Delta because everyone else does and if you’re not then you will nit fit. Feels like sorority or fraternity 4) low salaries compared to other tech companies. Delta thinks that the benefits will equal up to higher salaries (it’s like why we need to pay you more when you can fly for free) WRONG! If you ask for a raise you will barely get 4% raise in few years 5) NOT REMOTE for a job that can simply be remote, if Delta wants to have and keep young talent they need to hop on the current market’s train 6) seems like people get hired based on years of experience (or how enthusiastic are about Delta’s culture) more than an actual skill - this will show on projects and you will notice 7) looking for agile methodologies or efficient project structure? good luck to you. not present 8) the entire company feels very disorganized 9) going to piggyback on 1) again, all Delta’s IT isn’t great. You can notice as an employee, requesting for stuff, or even navigating through employee web and so on but, as a Software Engineer, I really saw techie things that I don’t ever want to see again

Ready Reserve - it's not for everybody

Pros

The flight benefits are about it really. Aside from that, there is that collective culture that everyone tries to help.

Cons

The 1300 hour limit for ready reserves makes it tricky to swap shifts when you need to, and is still counted against you when they freeze your schedule during irregular operations (i.e. severe weather). At the same time, doubling up seems to be easier to do in some of the hubs like Atlanta, Minneapolis, Detroit, etc despite some bases having high seniority, making it harder to work your way up. If you want to move up in the company, then you'd have to be open to relocating. Your shifts fluctuate about every six months when you bid again based on seniority, so over time it does provide more flexibility in your daily life if you choose to stick it out.
