Decent Early - Mid Career choice

Pros

Opportunities to work on a variety of different projects with limited oversight. Good early career opportunities, you’ll learn a lot and be able to grow. You may get to take on new roles outside of entry level ones that allow you to build a career. It’s in an interesting niche of the healthcare software industry, good place to learn the basics on healthcare software. The pay and benefits are decent. The company still has a very start up mentality. Self starters can benefit and start building a career base.

Cons

Management struggles a bit to figure out career pathing, and maintaining employees with long term career goals. Not great with telework policies. 2-3 years is probably the peak stay value for early and mid career folks. Office building in Rockville could use an upgrade, older building with various medical offices. Germantown office is fairly nice. Arizona office is pretty small, for the most part just exists for the company President to have an office. The startup vibe can cause cause workaholic syndrome, you have to exercise self discipline to make sure you’re being healthy with your work choices. Management can be very “die for the cause”.

Pros

I've been a developer at 10 companies in just as many years and I can say with a clear conscience that DrFirst is one of the best employers I've ever worked for. I'm not doing this for money, nor am I a secret recruiter trying to sucker people into interviews for this company. I'm writing this review because when I was interviewing a year ago, I was turned off by the disparaging comments to a point I didn't even want the job. This continued into low expectations upon joining the company. Alas, my experience since then has been consistently positive. I'll just highlight a couple things: - environment is lax but not boring. there's work to do but reasonable deadlines. - processes are constantly changing for the better. - really great recent hires (at the management level) changing company culture for the better. - top-tier veteran developers who are great at teaching. - small teams and capable members who aren't afraid to step up. - growing company with funding = room for personal growth without killing yourself. It's probably hard to fathom why someone would write all of this without having an incentive. There's no incentive. Chalk it up to appreciation for the way that I was treated by the company. This was a good place for me.

Cons

Lack of bonus structure and financial incentives for over-achievers Lack of communication between teams Lack of good knowledge transfer Difficult to learn material and industry lingo if you don't come from a medical background Too many process changes too quickly

Pros

Individual products within DrFirst are run like independent businesses. This gives those products a great deal of freedom to find processes and approaches that work for them. I have mostly been involved with the Backline product which is a great product and has a great team of people who are great in their roles. Work life balance is great and respected generally. The benefits and salary are above other places. Some of the people are really fun to work with. They give out more swag than any other company I've work for and have frequent celebrations to reward good work.

Cons

Because each product is run independently, there is alot of silo'ing in the company, because the products don't share best practices with each other and take pride in doing things THEY'RE OWN WAY even when their own way is backwards. This results in some products being really awful places to work. While I enjoyed my time working on Backline, when I would work with the other products it was not a good experience and usually a very bad experience professionally. It amazing how one company can have such a range within it--- from great to absolutely terrible. Where I worked was good and I am happy I had that chance, but I would never work for the other products and wouldn't recommend them.

Thank you for your time with the company and with our secure messaging product, Backline. We are proud of the difference our products make in healthcare and Backline would not be as successful without dedicated members of the team.
