Pros

When you work for DrFirst, you have to work for DrFirst. This is not a place for those unwilling to step outside of their normal position to aid in other areas. Every day is faced with new challenges and demands creative thinking. This is a company breaking new ground, so new ideas are a must. Yes, there are often long hours involved, but speaking personally, most of those are by choice because I am challenged and driven to find the best solution. My managers do recognize and aplaud extra efforts given, especially when not requested. They never bat an eye when I have asked to work from home or need to shift my schedule to accomodate for a personal need, because they know where their employee's heart is. Perhaps this experience is different for others, but not for me. All of the executives know my name, many know my wife's name, and some even ask about my dog by name. Every idea is heard and every question is answered. I have grown with DrFirst am proud of what, we as a team, have and continue to accomplish.

Cons

Its not a con for me, but people at DrFirst work hard. If you are looking to do the minimal, surf the web and drop your pen precisely at 5 everyday, this is not the place for you. If working hard to break new ground and meet the challenges is overbearing and not inspiring to you, again, this is not the place for you. This industry moves quickly, so priorities often shift rapidly, this can be frustrating, but it is what it is.

Pros

I take great pride and enjoy the fulfilling self-achievement working as a Business Technical Analyst ('BTA') here. My position plays a very important role in this company and it directly affects how doctors can better provide medical services to patients. As a BTA, I work closely with requirements, large data, user interface designs, testing, and deployment planning. I take my job very seriously, because I know every my efforts and inputs matters to the product we deliver. And, the product improves thousands of doctors and patients' lives everyday – Pretty Cool, eah? The best part working as a BTA in DrFirst is - my job function is never fixed and is always challenging. I am constantly encouraged to play different roles; to learn and to perform different job functions. In very fast gone by 8 month so far, I have done work on business analysis, project management, setting up a knowledgebase, QA, and data mining work. Here, at DrFirst, only sky is the limit. You just need to voice yourself out to participate projects that are interested to you.

Cons

Lengthy Hiring Process. The hiring and interview processes are lengthy and cumbersome. In fact, I have gone through 3 interviews and 1 analytical assessment – it doesn’t really both me. In fact, I feel much more job security and can be certain the people I work with are brilliant and quality individuals.

Pros

DrFirst is a great place to gain healthcare IT experience. During my career at DrFirst I have been given many opportunities for advancement. I enjoy the amount of company activities that occur (pot lucks, food swaps, holiday parties) as I feel it allows an opportunity to converse among other departments with people you typically do not interact with. Depending on the department there is good structure and a clear understanding as to what you are responsible for. Depending on the department the managers are flexible and understanding if you need to adjust your schedule occasionally to handle personal issues that may arise. The amount of paid vacation seems to be higher than most companies when you first start off but these include sick days so you must use vacation if you want to get paid when sick (for some people that is not an issue and for others it is).

Cons

The interview process can be exhausting as you may go through potentially 4 interviews. I found this hard while trying to work a full-time job and not make it known I was interviewing at another company. The work environment can sometimes be overwhelming with departmental "cliques". Between departments there does not seem to be a lot of communication which can create additional and unnecessary work at times. From observing, some departments have tough deadlines and quotas to meet which can create a very high-stress work environment. Healthcare benefits have changed creating more out-of-pocket expenses for those who have more frequent medical visits. The work load at times can be overwhelming and require you to stay late which is not something all employees are willing to do. With some employees not willing to put in a few extra minutes a day it creates sometimes an hour of extra work for those willing to pick up the slack.
