Good, friendly, hard working people dedicated to the mission of the company Volunteer opportunities Great retirement benefits You make an impact in the daily lives of everyone around you Nice work environments Safety culture Proud history

Cons

Very easy to get pigeon-holed with limited opportunities for such a big company Negative public image New leaders from the outside are pushing seasoned employees out Leadership is not transparent Loyalty is no longer valued A lot of lip service is paid to diversity with very little action from leaders in the business No longer provides job stability A lot of red tape Very risk averse company which is stifling for creativity Horrible IT systems

Good company but not flexible

Pros

Duke is great when it comes to pay and benefits. I have found they typically pay above market and the benefits are better than most companies.

Cons

The downside is almost no flexibility for working parents. They talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. They are consistently listed as being great for working mothers, but my experience is that it depends on your manager. I currently have a manager who detests flexible scheduling of any kind. In certain departments, face-time is valued over productivity. For example, I have small children, and get lectured if I need to come in late or leave early, and working from home is forbidden. But in contrast, I have a co-worker who frequently sleeps at his desk. Priorities, anyone?
