Pros

Connecting and developing relationships with students as well as other faculty.

Cons

• $18 - $19 an hour is not sufficient to support a family. • The candidate needs to pay for a series of clearances and background checks before they're eligible. • The training consists of about 40 hours of online coursework, which mostly addresses state laws, followed by a single day of online training. All of it is unpaid, and it isn't adequate to prepare a candidate to effectively manage a classroom, especially for classes with special needs children, which made up a large percentage of the opportunities available. • On 2 or 3 occasions, over my 10 or so shifts, students reported that I had done something I didn't do, reported something I did without context, or misrepresented something I said. In each case these were problems students that their teachers had forewarned me about, yet ESS responded by freezing my account so I couldn't pick up shifts, and said they would reach out to me after an investigation was completed. Not only didn't they defend me, or provide me with information about the investigation. They simply never got back to me.

Horrible Pay

Pros

Some days are very easy with not much to do. If you are young and want to become a teacher it can add to your resume and experience. If your kid goes to a school and you have a significant other who is the bread winner it can be ok. I have no idea how anyone who doesn't fit into these two categories can afford to live while working here.

Cons

Where to start, only paid 98 dollars a day with no benefits. Only 30 minute lunch break. Very confusing about who to talk to about questions. School staff can report you to ESS and then ESS will talk to you as if they have any idea what is going on. You are at the very bottom of hierarchy so someone on a power trip will look at you in this respect. You will be moved constantly and sometimes put in classrooms where students need help using the bathroom.
