Pros

Echo serves beer every Friday at 4:30.

Cons

Echo's culture is the most problematic area. There is a lack of professionalism between coworkers/carriers/customers/managers. Everyone there is constantly cussing at each other and they simply have no respect for one another. Many unethical behaviors occur in the workplace that employees have gotten away with, simply because of their "status" and "how much money they make for Echo". Employees use drugs in the work place. Employees also participate in sexual relationships with one another, and as a result, their business grows because they are given big accounts by whomever they are sleeping with. When it comes to solving issues, instead of trying to mediate the problem, this kind of information is viewed as "gossip" amongst employees and little is done to fix it. As a woman who worked in this industry, sexual harassment was an obstacle that I faced daily. Despite logistics being a male-dominant industry, I was still mistreated because of my gender. Not only did this come from carriers/customers, but also from coworkers. I was asked out on dates multiple times, and when I rejected them, these men were still pursuing me. I was constantly stared at by coworkers, talked down upon, and was never taken seriously because of my gender. I was constantly told that I had an "advantage" because I am a woman, so I have a "unique voice". There is no regard for human safety and constant miscommunication within employees. When the Chicago weather went down to -55F with wind chills, we were still expected to come into work on time and Echo never compensated anybody for their Uber/Lyft rides. Also, Echo expects employees to work 10 hours/day while being paid very little. You sign a non-exempt form that states that the company will not pay you OT. However, once signed, various managers will encourage you to not take breaks and lunches, and to come in earlier and to stay later. Also, in the interview process, you will be told that you can make up to 6 figures at the end of the year, and that is simply not the case. In addition, there is little to no growth opportunities within the company.

Toxic culture where you'd least expect it

Pros

Social workplace geared at attracting young talent Ambitious, smart workers

Cons

Executive leadership should listen up. You have a toxic culture brewing in the worst of places. You wonder why nepotism is repeatedly mentioned in our Glassdoor reviews? It's not helped when the team who should be driving our culture is the worst offender. You're being fooled. I've seen talented leaders leave our company because of favoritism and a lack of support from leadership. If we can't get it right on our own team, how can you possibly believe it's going to be successful throughout Echo? Start at the top and you'll find your biggest offender.

Thank you for your feedback. As you know from your time here, an open door policy with leadership and positive company culture where our employees can thrive is of the upmost importance to me as we continue to grow. I want to talk more specifically about ways we can make sure all of our team members feel appreciated and supported. You have my email, please reach out to me directly to discuss further. –Doug Waggoner, CEO

L&D Needs Work

Pros

Echo has a flashy culture. The company itself is growing like a weed, so the opportunity to make your way and try new things to get recognized is there. Peers are generally fun, young, and passionate about their jobs.

Cons

This review is specific toward the L&D Department within the Talent Team: Potential applicants to the L&D team should be wary of what exactly the position entails. It's a difficult department to work for, and though there are dozens of reasons why this is the case, what it boils down to is the fact that no one in leadership has any definitive handle on learning theory or content design. Department leaders are embedded in the politics of training, so much so that no substantive work is completed, and when it is, it's demanded so hastily that the quality suffers. For a $2 billion company, they have a hard time allocating resources to employees interested in creating high quality content for much needed training initiatives. Expect to have very little control over any projects that you take on, with little freedom to impact the needs of the business because leaders have already determined, with little formal know-how, what the training needs are. They'll over-determine almost every project you're assigned to, thus reducing you to an ineffective order-taker.

Absolutely, we are not your average culture; we are fast paced, highly successful and have exploded in the past 11 years’ becoming one of the top companies in the industry. Echo is a high growth company and our L&D department plays a vital part in being able to grow as quickly as we have. Part of being in the L&D department comes with the understanding that we need to tailor our training and content creations to fit the needs of the business. Our culture is not one that has black and white learning - we look for people who want to be part of a fluid, creative, adaptable learning environment. The management team within L&D and across Echo is all about being responsible for the vision, growth and direction of the department. As an employee, you are seen as a partner to the business and help create a blended learning approach that fits the needs of our company. Thank you for writing a review, I hope you find something that is a better fit for you! Jimmy Dyer, Sr. Manager Talent Optimization
