Tons of vision, challenging culture and leadership

Pros

This is a company that has been around for 10+ years, has a really great product and a bunch of happy customers. They are really trying to do some innovative things. So as a sales rep, you actually have something that is differentiated to sell. The product team and CTO are very bright and have a ton of energy. They truly seem to care about innovation and making customers happy and the company seems to be investing heavily in that area. The boulder office has a good culture with HR leadership being located there and many long time employees as well.

Cons

Except for product and HR leadership, the rest of the management team is very unplugged from what it takes to run a truly great company. While founded in Boulder, this company is now a UK run and backed business (though not a startup) and that brings with it cultural and distance challenges. The CEO is a "visionary" but seems very unplugged from the people and culture and seems more concerned about being mentioned online than anything else. The leadership team seems very unorganized at times. Sales leadership in north America is very capable but very unsupported resulting in many of the issues a few other reviews have highlighted (compensation, operations). Marketing was making great strides and seemed to get what was needed to be done but left. Attrition is also ramping up so make sure you explore all those areas if you are applying. The Boulder and London culture gap is real.

Pros

The people are great and really make the office enjoyable. Dogs are able to be in the office. Snacks are available most days. The coffee machine is awesome. The product is great and will continue to get better. Most of the company has MacBooks which is nice. The travel reimbursement policy is a good one. The development team is incredibly talented and is putting out great work. The marketing team is really making significant progress and should help boost visibility. The technical consultant team is full of incredibly talented people.

Cons

Compensation is far below the industry and area. Compensation plans change often and have gone down consistently. They will say compensation is uncapped but this is untrue. No leadership support for career growth. You will be asked to do significant work outside your actual job and you will not be compensated for the work. Working on projects will not benefit your career but only the company. You will have to do significant accounting on your paychecks if you expect to be paid what you earned. There is more turnover here than any company I have ever been a part of. This should be a MASSIVE red flag that is being missed by all levels of the organization.

Tough to develop and grow

Pros

People are genuine and believe in their product.

Cons

Biggest con is it’s not a progressive company. The executive leadership team is full of men (aside from HR) and run a company just under 100 employees. For the rest of the company, it’s hard to be a woman and believe you will have an opportunity to advance within. The company needs more diversity, especially in leadership. Those employees who don’t sit on the executive team have a complete blind eye to everything that goes on. It’s incredibly hard for employees to develop and most learning curves flatten in under a year. A ton of turnover under a year, especially in sales with their division leadership this is because everyone thinks they’re signing up for a startup, but TestPlant is like every other stuffy corporate office.
