Pros

When Elevance was still Anthem, it wasn't a bad company to work for. Great PTO, great work from home policy.

Cons

Once Gail started, the company began to go downhill. LIttle regard for employees and their health and well-being. Gail changed the work from home policy even for those originally hired as full time WFH and required everyone to work in office 3 days a week or quit. I never had the right tools or training for my job despite begging my managers. I had to invent my own tools and workarounds just to get things done. Constant re-org happening, even back to Wellpoint days. In 20 years, I had 15 different direct managers. I stayed with the company, stupidly. When it came time to let people go in 2023's Q4 RIF, along with 5,000 other people, they sent me packing despite my time there, knowledge of the company, and flawless record. I would never recommend working there and if I had it to do over, I never would have stayed. They don't care about their employees as people.

Work at home being eliminated for many

Pros

Previously, Anthem offered a work-life balance by allowing associates to work from home.

Cons

Senior leadership has announced directors and above must return to the office Mon-Fri, requiring staff to potentially drive over an hour each way to work in an office. In a cubicle at that. No privacy for proprietary conversations or delicate/confidential HR conversations.

Pros

If you are being referred or if you already have family that works for Anthem, it is one of the best places to work. Things were very flexible at one time, with off-site work arrangements and no set hours for specific job types or departments. Anthem seems to pay really well compared to its competitors (40% more in most cases). The company seems to be very LGBTQ+ friendly as there were many people working in a professional office setting in an industry that is typically far behind the times who looked as though they would be unfairly judged and probably not hired for any serious positions elsewhere.

Cons

The benefits package is terrible and expensive for the fact that the company provides benefits as the core of its business model. The company tends to do massive layoffs every year and starts with the people with the most seniority or higher salaries. Human Resource complaints (sexual harrassment, prejudiced/racist banter in the workplace) are often ignored, covered up, and the reporters are typically "iced out" and eventually laid off or fired for performance after sudden changes to their work or schedule are made, in an obvious and retaliatory manner. (By the way, I am not referring to myself or anything that happened to me which leads me to my next point, nothing reported to HR remains confidential or anonymous, EVER!)
