Epic does not care about their employees physical or mental health. This was extremely apparent during COVID, when Epic attempted to force all of their employees back into the office in August of 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic. This reckless policy outraged employees and was featured in the national news twice. Epic’s communication around COVID was callous and uncaring, which lead to huge amounts of employee stress. Many strong employees quit and others stayed but became disillusioned. Epic downplayed the risk of COVID throughout the pandemic. Recently, Epic has changed their policies and job roles without notice, negatively impacting employees. Three large divisions were merged for unclear reasons, which changed many people’s job descriptions. Epic also changed their consulting branch policy so that consultants who live in the Verona area must work on campus, even though they had been working from home for years pre-COVID, which is a significant disruption for these people. Epic has created a “yes-person” culture where people who disagree with policies are punished. Mid-level managers therefore suppress feedback, rather than sharing it with those above them. This was noticeable during COVID and is especially hypocritical because Epic claims to encourage feedback. Epic retains their employees through force. Rather than think critically about why employees are leaving and addressing their concerns, Epic instead implements policies that make it more difficult to quit. For example, there is a long non-compete which makes it very to find another job. Another example of Epic controlling their employees is the forced individual arbitration requirement, an anti-worker move that was upheld by the supreme court. Epic will consume your life, and this is how they want it. Epic’s high achieving culture combined with tight staffing and urgent work easily leads to burn out.
