Pros

Working at the forefront of innovation as a Shift Lead means having the opportunity to contribute to real world testing and helping ensure high quality data and safe operations that directly support the development of the technology. This gives us control to directly influence how successful daily operations continue. The significance of Shift Leads guide and develop Vehicle Safety Operators allowing them the platform to succeed. Following on from this, we make a real impact on the safety and performance with problem solving and make decisions in a fast-paced environment. Shift Leads push for continuous improvement by identifying opportunities (as well as taking on feedback) to improve processes and efficiency across Fleet Operations. By building a positive team culture through clear communication, support, and accountability it improves the general standard of work and raises the floor of quality in Fleet Operations. Lastly, having the availability to continue honing leadership skills while contributing to the advancement of autonomous driving technology is a great advantage to have when building your personal professional portfolio.

Cons

The Cons would be: Being responsible for team performance, safety, and operations. It is not only your own work but the work of others and their impact has a knock on effect on the wider business so it is imperative that the communication between Shift Lead, Vehicle Safety Operators and other Stakeholders is strong. Having to manage staffing, vehicles, and operational demands can become challenging due to day to day needs of the Shift. If not maintained then there is always a possibility of losing control of the Shift. There is a necessity for addressing performance, feedback, and conflict professionally as it is something that should not be avoided. It needs to be dealt within the time frame it occurs as these situations can and may be time sensitive. Making quick, effective decisions in a fast-paced environment due to the unpredictable nature of the business is paramount. Not just doing the aforementioned but maintaining a high standard while doing it can be mentally fatiguing. With the ability to respond to the evolving priorities and supporting the team through change. It is important for Shift Leads to remain flexible, embrace change positively, and communicate updates clearly to the team. This means helping VSOs understand new ways of working, addressing any concerns, and ensuring changes are implemented consistently while maintaining morale, performance, and operational standards.
