Good Job if You're Desperate

Pros

Salary , PTO, and benefits are decent. Expect to be hired and given the keys to the kingdom if you play rugby.

Cons

If you are looking for a role that offers growth and advancement opportunities, RUN. ESI is a dead-end job. Administrative staff are subjugated to the demands and whims of their engineers. If your engineer is having a bad day, prepare to take the brunt of their verbal abuse. Gender roles are still highly in play here at ESI. Step inside and you'll feel as though you've taken a trip back to the 1960s, where women were allowed to say little more than "yes sir." If you wear a short skirt or show extra cleavage, you can expect perks like a trip to Disney World, or an exorbitant year-end bonus. Are you bothered by this? Don't try to have a meaningful conversation with HR. They are paid six figures to report everything you say back to your bosses, and you can be sure you'll be threatened thereafter. Those in HR are merely the puppets of those in charge, so you can expect zilch when it comes to employee representation.

Interesting projects, but advancement opportunities are broken promises

Pros

Genuinely nice engineers to work with, well educated and hard working. PTO and benefits are better than most companies. If you play Rugby you are hired!

Cons

DRAMA across all offices, office politics to the extreme... HR does not handle employee complaints with sincerity. Most incidents are swept under the rug. It is frowned upon to bring a complaint to corporate HR. Management wants to handle within each office, producing zero results. Managementment is poorly trained to adequately manage. Micromanagement to the extreme.

Quality and Reputation of Firm is Declining

Pros

Very intelligent consultants can still be found. Some are hit and miss, but they have some very bright ones to work with. Regarded (in the past) as a high quality consulting firm.

Cons

Management often changes views on topics. Every year that goes by, the company management gets worse. Micromanaging to the extreme. They do not believe in supporting employees or retaining them for long term growth. Company is ran by inexperienced individuals who have no formal management or business training. An engineer does not make a good CEO or regional manager. COO had no prior experience before starting at the company straight out of law school. Most higher level individuals hired based on playing Rugby with the CEO. Company is growing very fast and is losing out on quality and reputation that was built from founders. Focus is on quantity of engineers and they are losing credibility of being a premier consulting firm. Quality of work product has drastically declined in recent years. Some consultants are not as truthful with their testimony and will say things that benefit the client that are not scientifically true. Offices outside of Illinois are in bad parts of towns and embarrassing to bring clients to. Significant amount of high ranking engineers are leaving or retiring, thus reducing mentors and learning opportunities.
