Good Time's Gone

Pros

Good office space in a convenient location in the loop. Trains to the suburbs are just a few blocks away. There's often food from meetings to grab in the kitchen. There are still lots of smart people around to learn from. Work hours are flexible.

Cons

The office culture was driven but casual when I joined. Since then, the company got larger, and senior management has forgotten what made the company successful. It's getting harder to get promoted, which is terrible for the young people who join us. And since we're getting bigger, the only way to make a big difference is to get "cherry-picked" into a cutting-edge project. The pace is still aggressive, but perks are disappearing every week it seems. Pay is average for the industry, but bonuses are getting smaller. Even worse, they (and raises) are mostly determined by how popular you are with your manager and managers from other departments. Finally, executives and senior management keep making big promises about positive new things, but they rarely deliver, and they've stopped listening to the complaints.

Poor Leadership

Pros

Very flexible work environment, food perks are great. Fantastic location next to all trains.

Cons

CIO is under qualified for his job; doesn't know how to fix productivity or attrition issues, so he re-orgs constantly. Somebody is going to have explain what makes a 'tech platoon' so much different than a squad. Does not encourage new ideas; only ideas he can understand. This translates to almost no growth. No strategic vision; uses words like 'better' or 'more' to set goals. Frustrating enough for me to start looking. CEO - have no idea, seems to only want to talk to the newspapers or at quarterly meetings, he then buries his face in a smartphone. Has as much charisma as CIO.

Pros

You'll get to meet some great people and its a chance to gain experience since no one has any of much mention. They're always hiring but then people are always leaving for better paying jobs. Sure they have snacks and give you a company branded tshirt but those are usually done in an attempt to hide the low pay and "make it harder for someone to leave than for them to stay."

Cons

always hiring cause no one stays, no one stays cause they don't value experience, and of course there is the bed bug problem. I asked for them to pay me what what Glassdoor listed as a fair salary, they wouldn't and I left and got 150% of what Enova paid me for the same work a month later. I miss the "friends" and thats where they try to get you, through the social network rather than paying you fairly. No one retires and it isn't just because they have such a youthful company, its because no one not just out of college would work there.
