Not the best place to work

Pros

The usual that people say pay, pto, and benefits

Cons

This is to be a great place to work but in the last 2 years the Bank has drastically changed for the worse. The Bank use to offer a great work/life balance and now employees work late into the evenings and on the weekends. The reason for this is because during the work day meetings take over everyone's calendar, so working late hours during the week and weekends is the only way to get work done. There is a very generous PTO plan but rarely do employees get to take their pto because Senior Leaders constantly disturb people while on vacation. If you are a favorite you can have any job at the bank or be promoted into a role with no experience - HR is a great example of this. POC are constantly ignored and never promoted yet DEI takes up everyone's time. Senior leaders waste everyone's time with their requests that have nothing to do with one's job or the Bank. Talk about return the bank in a hybrid model is exhausting and useless - each leader will do whatever they want as always. Not sure where the bank is headed and it's really sad.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are always looking for opportunities to improve the way we work. Based on employee feedback, we recently began an effort to address our meeting culture at the Bank and are actively working with employees and focus groups to make meetings more efficient. This is part of our overall goal to ensure a work/life balance for employees, encouraging them to disconnect when needed and collaborate with team members to tackle projects. We are proud of the continued growth of our employees across the Bank. Promotions are earned and employees’ careers are supported through our robust performance management and leadership programs. We value diversity, equity, and inclusion and ensure employees are provided the same opportunities to grow their careers. We also value transparency and feedback. The pandemic has proven difficult for many organizations, and being open and communicative with our employees has been crucial to keeping everyone up to date on our plans as they evolve. We are excited to move forward together and continue identifying solutions to make the Bank a great place to work for all.

Pros

Great work life balance as well as great benefits

Cons

I found the work to be extremely repetitive and dull. The office was outdated. Have to work on all banking days, which means Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, and the Friday after Thanksgiving.

We’re glad to hear that you think the Bank is a great place to work! In early 2021, we moved our office to a new, updated space at the Old Post Office to provide employees with modern amenities and a collaborative environment. We are proud to offer generous PTO and 11 U.S. holidays a year, ensuring we give our employees the time off they deserve while supporting our members when they are open. Our regular performance check-ins allow for continuous development within employees’ roles, and we regularly share internal openings if employees are interested in trying a new career path. We empower our employees to own their career journey so they can do their best work.

Mis-Guided and Disppointing

Pros

Great benefits including pension, 401K and tuition reimbursement.

Cons

Top leadership says one thing, but does another. Many claim that they buy in to Diversity & Inclusion and they can support this by forcing their employees to attend D&I courses, but they continue to promote and support the employees that they go out to lunch with on a regular basis. Often, people are promoted at the middle management level based on who they know with no tangible experience. The technology is completely outdated. And with poor leadership in place, it's hard for employees to not get bitter. They consistently see a lack of cohesiveness among upper management and prioritization, which leads to complacency. So much potential at this place, because there are some great people who work here, but the lack of support by management and the complete disregard of employees and their thoughts by HR is deplorable. They claim that there is accountability through the Performance Management review process, but it's all another buzz word that's not understood by the ones facilitating it.

We appreciate you sharing your comments regarding your experience. At FHLB Chicago, we encourage employees to have open dialogue and offer their input, whether it’s on a team call or a bank wide initiative. No one is ever punished or reprimanded for offering a different perspective. Feedback is what drives our work forward and leads to growth and new ideas. Our managers and leaders take great care to ensure their teams feel supported and heard. To help them grow in their roles, we offer manager-specific training and development sessions and resources. If employees are not feeling supported, we provide various, confidential avenues for them to share their experience. We offer multiple checkpoints throughout the year for performance management, ensuring we remain accountable always, not just during review periods. We agree we have great potential at the Bank, and it will take everyone’s efforts to keep moving forward.
