Pros

Decent compensation, occasionally interesting projects, sharp colleagues

Cons

Very poor management at the team level in some groups (econ); unpleasant culture in which rich baby boomers operate their own fiefdoms; gross offices, unless you're in a large regional main office (i.e., DC, LA, Houston etc); outside of decent overall salaries, there is a concerted and constant effort to nickel-and-dime employees, despite us constantly hearing about record-breaking profits

Better consulting firms out there

Pros

Decent compensation. Some teams are very strong. Some projects are better than others.

Cons

Disclaimer: these characteristics are not consistent across the firm, but they are more prevalent across certain teams. Do your homework before joining a specific team. Favoritism and inner office politics need to be reeled in. For some SMDs, it’s more important for you to be golfing/drinking buddies with senior leadership vs. the quality of your work. Environment of some teams discouraged independent thinking. Questioning or disagreeing with some MDs can be viewed in an unfavorable manner and receive a negative response from the MD. They promote a “roll up our sleeves attitude” but some MDs feel that they are above certain levels of work and will not (or cannot) do it.

Pros

Office management staff is wonderful. Opportunities for bonus on a monthly basis. Great downtown Chicago location.

Cons

Unlike the rest of the consulting industry, FTI does not let you work from home which can be extremely difficult after traveling Monday-Thursday. Culture is very stiff and exclusive. Management is more concerned with promotions based on time rather than performance. Lack of female leadership and staff.
