Pros

Licensing is the only reason. But even licensing are paid from your own pocket. Farmers do not pay for licensing. The premiums for auto and home are competitive here, but they make it up by over-charging later on. Their billing is the worst I have ever seen.

Cons

They are very aggressive in recruiting and churning. They are aggressive over-all and very short sighted in their business practice. In my opinion, Farmers Insurance is THE worst P&C company to work for and has the worst admin and billing.

Pros

You are given ample opportunity to promote. You really have to work you tail off. They give you everything you need to succeed. Personally I feel that most of todays generation does not really understand the concept of working. I work from home about 90% of the time. You are given a company car and laptop for personal use (within reason). I have never had a problem getting compensated for overtime worked. Farmers is great about recognizing outstanding performance. It is not uncommon to recieve spot bonuses and gift cards in excess of $50. Farmer's is a company you can retire with.

Cons

It can be stressful at high volume times when you have claims calling all the time. Its not so much Farmers, but the insurance industry as a whole. We are not trusted from the get go. I do not like the changes that Farmers is making to the benefits, but they are still better than what you find at other companies. You can make up to 25% of you annual salary as a bonus that is given out each March. In my opinion the health insurance is quite expensive. I believe it is about $100 a month just for me. It would go up even more if I added my wife.

Pros

The people. There are number of people who have been with the company for a very long time, they know the business in and out and they are extremely valuable. Development opportunity – since the company is owned by Zurich, there are opportunities to work internationally on certain projects or a transfer to Zurich. At the department I worked at, the training was very good, management supported training courses provided by third party and also provided plenty of internal training. The carpool service sponsored by the company is very rare. They encourage employees to carpool, vanpool or taking the public transits.

Cons

People who have been with the company for a long time seem to be left out of promotions. Management does not recognize their importance and how valuable they are. They are often left on the sideline doing “special project”. Salary is generally lower, because they claimed there was Profit Sharing. However, Profit Sharing is going away in 2009 and there is no salary increase to make up the difference. The benefits used to be very good, but they are also changing in 2009 and not for the better. They are combining vacation days with sick days. Employees get a set number of pay-time-off, sick and vacation days both count toward the pay time off, so it is really up to the employees not to get sick. The company is extremely cost-saving minded. They don’t like to spend money on virtually anything.
