As a QA or Dev you might get to work on several kinds of things, without any "official" position. This can lead to unspecialized positions and improper understanding of the software Since everything is undocumented, the company invests in each and every one of the employees to understand their software. Therefore, knowledge is passed on from mouth to mouth and parts of it can be gone forever when an employee leaves, costing the company money and time.
