TL;DR - Formlabs makes the greatest 3D printers in the world. Your peers will expect a lot of you. Only join this company if you are prepared to do some of the hardest and most rewarding work of your career. Most of the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with here are intelligent, passionate, caring individuals. We work hard. We play hard. We push one another to levels that we previously didn’t know we could reach. Formlings (our demonym for people who work at Formlabs) are the weirdest and most interesting group of people I’ve ever been a part of in my life. This place is a blast. The work is unbelievably interesting. The leap in technical complexity from the Form 1/1+ to the Form 2 is overwhelming when you peek under the hood. The Form 2 isn’t the most complicated system in the world, but it might be the most complicated one ever shipped by less than 40 engineers. I have yet to ship a product at Formlabs. When I do I know that I’ll be held to a high standard by everyone at our company and all of our customers. The potential for personal and professional growth at Formlabs is almost unlimited. When I was hired a year and a half ago I was one engineer on a two person team tasked with exploring new technology for an unlikely-to-ship future product. Today I’m leading a ten person team that is on the edge of building the second major product line at one of the best hardware startups in the world. We’re only going to grow from here - there are going to be several stories like mine in the future of Formlabs. I wasn’t randomly “promoted” or chosen to lead the people on my team - I earned the position by building increasingly complex systems with limited resources. I had never met any of the members of the management team before starting work here. I’m not best friends with the rest of the leaders at Formlabs. There is no impenetrable inner circle at the top of this company if you are willing to work hard and produce results. This is the hardest job I’ve ever had. Yes, I really think that is a pro. I came to Formlabs because I wanted to be pushed, poked, and prodded to become a better engineer and leader. I have much higher standards for myself and the people I work with than I ever had before coming to Formlabs. I know that I’m capable of things that would have intimidated me to no end a decade ago. Success at Formlabs is a hard fought battle. Achieving it means that you’ve done some of the best work of your career and shipped a product that embarrasses your competition. I have zero regrets about spending the last few years of my life here and I hope that I’ll have the chance to continue serving with people at this company for years to come.
