A Life-Changing Mission

Pros

As a young professional (~3 years out of college), finding a job felt a lot like I had to pick 2: - a mission I actually believe in - a team that is fun to work with (and actually be friends with!) - a position that allows me to develop new skills - an opportunity for career growth - reasonable compensation At Forward, I was shocked to discover that I didn't have to pick. Sure, working at a startup is a lot of work, but it seriously is worth it. I work with people who are incredibly intelligent and passionate about changing lives. They believe in my abilities often more than I do. I get to work on projects that push the boundaries of what I believe I can do and develop skills I never thought I would have at this age. I get to work alongside the most brilliant doctors and engineers who teach me new things every single day. More than anything, even on my worst days, I know that everything that I am doing at Forward is contributing to genuinely changing the world in ways I could never imagine. How many people can say they get to work on a project like this ever in their lifetime? I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to do so at Forward.

Cons

Working at a fast-paced startup is not for the faint of heart! Days can be long and projects can feel overwhelming. We're solving problems that have never been faced before, so failure is a daily part of the job. Things are constantly changing, so you have to make an effort to keep up with what's next. Personally, I find all these "cons" pretty fun, but obviously not everyone will ;)

Pros

Innovative mission statement with hard working people.

Cons

Entire company shut down on a Tuesday night and was handled in a super unprofessional manner. Basic services were glitching out constantly.

Pros

You learn a lot and you learn quickly. If you’re looking for a challenge in your work, then this place might work for you. The majority of people were the nicest and most motivated people you’ll ever meet.

Cons

They take advantage of people who are early in their careers. They will try to convince you that you deserve to get paid less than others for various intangible reasons, they will overstep any boundary you need to set for yourself, your health, and your safety by convincing you that to consider yourself and your family is against the mission, and they will weaponize your lack of experience to downgrade and diminish your voice in conversations you’re invited to participate in. There is zero organizational structure. While this is common in a startup environment, it ended up being very toxic in this environment because this was used as an excuse to provide no raises when you new role was more responsibility and more work. People were also put into managerial positions that they weren’t even remotely qualified for (i.e. Engineering manager as head of recruiting ) and with hiring a lot of new college graduates, that left little professional guidance on how to tackle challenges. Meetings with execs are often uncomfortable as you watch your colleagues and managers get publicly shammed for differing opinions. Managers openly discussed not wanting to be in certain meetings with the CEO because they were afraid of having to deal with him without their department head present. My advice for anyone looking to work here - Make sure to know your own worth and value before agreeing to employment. Make sure to establish boundaries before you start and if they can’t honor what you need, move on because it’s not worth it. And it’s not normal for companies to not answer basic questions about compensation and benefits in interviews
