Pros

Free soda; decent PTO; benefits are OK (minus 401k); some of the staff are competent; some of the managers care.

Cons

Low pay; 401k matching is really low; mandatory daily OT; expected OT in addition to the daily OT. They lack a means to track performance. If you put in a bunch of OT and push through a bunch of OPCs you are considered a great employee, meanwhile you may be an idiot.

Pros

If you hate your family, this job will solve that.

Cons

- Management is very combative and has no problem throwing developers under the bus. - Management are scared of being publicly berated by the president so they can’t lead properly. - The fear of the president drives the quality (or lack there of) of the product. Everything is functioning *just* enough to not have the president call their personal cell phone. - Management lacks any functioning knowledge of the code in their department. - Management uses retaliatory practices. - Mismanagement to the point where I began to question if it was sabotage. - Working consistent free overtime is expected and not rewarded on yearly reviews. - Annual raises below cost of living increase. - You must review yourself since management has no idea what’s going on. - Contracts/Deadlines are created with no developers at the table. - The product is built on ancient technology. - The product should be serving the nation and helping the unemployed, yet the lack of care and pride in the product is rife. - The product is universally hated by users. - Every second of salary and hourly employees time is manually logged on a timer system. - Ticketing & Timer are an extremely outdated in-house system. - Working exactly 40 hours a week will earn you a talking to from management. - Agile is just another metric to track developers by. - All suggestions to management are gaslit away. - The president *literally* laughs at the ask of employees ability to buy or earn stock in the company. - Health insurance is very expensive for families. - All developers are on call 24/7. - Work life balance is not on their radar at all. - Developers demo and pitch products but see no reward in pay. - Toxic blame culture on inter-team projects. - The only way to grow in the company is to outlast the person next to you. - Any technical leadership is to just apply bandaid over bandaid. - Every developer in the company receives over 100 automated emails a day. Management says get over it. - The culture is one of panic and constant “Code Reds”. - No amount of loyalty or longevity earns you any respect from management. - Every shinning star eventually gets run off by management.

First, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. There are things that could have been addressed had they been brought to our attention. We provide a product that helps people find jobs and get paid their unemployment insurance benefits. These systems must be up 24/7 and to that person who doesn't have a job and no source of income, we provide a means for them to survive until they begin working; so yes, if a system goes down, it is all hands on deck until it is back online. This is explained during the hiring process. We have regular above and beyond bonuses, we even had an off-cycle annual cost of living increase that went to all employees across the board. The average merit increase is 4% which is above the national average. Please note, this is a private company and stock options are not available. There are many more concerns that with you have outlined, but without speaking with you directly it is difficult to address because there is no context or details based on your experience. I am sorry that this was your experience and sincerely wish you the best in your future endeavors. GSI

Pros

None from an individual perspective; they do employ a lot of people so that is good for the local economy.

Cons

This is a place for cogs. Zero innovation, zero opportunity for anything cool. If you can sling some code they'll pretty much hire anyone. To be successful, just keep your head down and your mouth shut.
