Pros
As a staff member, great place to work if looking for work life balance or for an almost-free degree. These things seem to come at the cost of salary. Although this is slowly changing, the entrepreneurial culture allows employees to utilize creativity in work processes and programs and learn new skills. Mason has a couple thousand employees and experience GREATLY differs by unit. Mason is facing a lot of employee turn-over right now and the administration seems to be trying to improve the situation.
Cons
Upper-level administration is becoming more corporate in structure which is streamlining many things for the better is also moving Mason away from it's flexible nature. Strong sense of hierarchy and self-importance at the top that is antithetical to the overall Mason spirit. Less support for alternative work schedules and remote work than when I started although the technology to support it is there. Human Resources has the knowledge and talent improve the employee experience by advocating for them against poorly trained managers, but chooses not too. Also, new (or new to me) policies limiting salaries for existing Mason employees who are hired for completely new positions is a huge disincentive for building a long term career at Mason. This stems from a state regulation but seems to be translated differently at will.
