      George Mason is a great public school for lecturers, instructors, and professors.

      Pros

      The working atmosphere is great. Colleagues are supportive with your work. Most students are respectful to the teachers. The administrative side of George Mason is smooth as well.

      Cons

      I don't think is there anything on the downside of working at George Mason University. The compensation could be a little better.

      Growing pains to become a research university

      Pros

      A wonderful and exciting place place to work as a researcher. A lot of freedom to make an impact in any area, but not much support from admin. It is what you should expect in a young research university.

      Cons

      The research professorships are not well established and it is about the same as working for a private company. GMU has a very tiered system with tenure track faculty at the top.

      Pros

      Work life balances. Very conducive and friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The organization is growing rapidly with high degree of innovation.

      Cons

      I can't say rightaway if there's anything specific downsides. Since it's a public institution, there may be limited advancement and growth for someone who prefers aggressive, challenging environment.
