Pros

Lots of opportunities due to small team. If you are very hard working and intelligent, Gilead provides ample opportunity to showcase talent to many people. Great benefits, which are what keep me at Gilead. Along with the very intelligent and collaborative people you can learn from cross-functionally. Compensation is superior to that of Genentech at the lower levels but equal at the higher levels. Teams are very equitable and there is a good amount of focus on DE&I. C Suite/EVPs (e.g. Dan, Andy, Johanna, Merdad, Jyoti, etc) seem to know what they are doing. Several of the new VP levels feel a little lost.

Cons

Lots of responsibilities due to small team, which requires flexibility. Promotions slow to obtain. If you are an exceptional employee, you get a promotion in 1-2 years (if lucky). However, the Team is growing so fast with lots of external talent, but these external recruits due to the competitive job market are less experienced and accepted with less rigor. They also attain very high titles. This leaves older very high performing Gilead employees training their managers and feeling snubbed of a promotion (Gilead does provide short term incentives, which help the high performers but in the long run it doesn’t make up for the differrnce). Eventually you train your manager to do his/her job and he/she with less experience is telling you what to do.

Pros

Depth of talent: Plenty of smart, dedicated people, across many teams. Impact: Historically, great mission and ability to make a difference have drawn kind and passionate people to Gilead. (Caveat: Talent exodus is under way).

Cons

External/On-Campus Daycare: • On-campus daycare is under investigation in 2019 • Daycare let go of leadership and entire classrooms of teaching staff in 2019, with limited explanation • Remaining teachers are great, but cloud of anxiety over institution has not been lifted Internal to Gilead: • Manager training and conduct around parental leave is uneven and unethical at times • Confidentiality breaches occur, potentially limiting development for affected employees • Multiple Gilead mothers have tragically endured hospitalization or significantly pre-mature delivery, due to work stress and unhealthy work culture • (Even sadder, they are not necessarily welcomed back, when they return to health and work) • Key projects may be stripped from high performers who are known to be expecting, with no rational explanation • Fathers and mothers may feel that they cannot take full leave, due to prevalent burnout/no boundaries culture • Those who do take leave risk slower career progression

Gilead Sciences Response

We strive to provide employees with benefits and services, such as onsite daycare, which are safe, convenient, help maintain work-life balance and support the health of our employees and their families. While Gilead does not manage the daycare center, we are committed to supporting our employees to ensure the onsite facility meets our high standards. Gilead’s employees and their families are important to us. We have robust leave of absence policies that are intended to support employees who need time away from work for a variety of reasons. The situation you describe regarding parental leave is unacceptable and is contrary to the spirit and plain meaning of Gilead’s HR policies and our core values. Please reach out to Human Resources or our Ethics Hotline (888-820-2719), or submit a complaint through our third-party ethics violations reporting system (https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/media/en/gui/51980/index.html). All allegations of misconduct are promptly reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken.

Incredible learning, but at times it was tough being a woman of color there

Pros

Beautiful campus with ample parking, wonderful perks and facilities, lovely offices, nice cafes. In my years there I saw an evolution in many positive ways, with increasing employee perks like commuter benefits and cafe improvements. The pace is incredible and the learning opportunities abound. I felt secure in my job and had the chance to learn across multiple diseases. I met some wonderfully dedicated people and some genius scientists too! Bottom line, learned a ton and met many friends for life. Thanks Gilead and bravo for the courage to tackle terrible diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C.

Cons

My experience being a minority woman at times was very hard and discouraging. Diversity/inclusion issues was ultimately a main driver for my leaving as there is a old club mentality and tribalism that felt very hard to break through after a certain level. There are a lot of public efforts in D&I across the company, but it's all a work in progress. Over time I felt my career options would be limited or delayed since I am a woman of color. I truly hope the new CEO tackles this key issue which may be driving (some) people away and limiting the power of its existing talent. Of course different groups may not have had the same D&I challenges; this was just my personal experience among many great ones.
