Pros

Students who aspire for greatness.

Cons

What is it like to work at a Great Hearts Academy? You are a block of cheese. A block of cheese placed on the icy-cold desktop of indifference and pedagogy. Then, a Microplane of criticism, judgement and degradation begins to grate you down into a slice of incompressible hopelessness. The Microplane is intended to sever any ounce of empathy, tenderness and joy existing within you. The disconsolate sliver which is left of you is raised up gloriously by administration and then the rejoicing begins— “Here it is!”. This is their antiquated, harrowing system of leadership. You have become a fragment of what you once were in the blessed name of Classical Education. You are sliced down, because they were once sliced down. They are a sliver of who they once were, so you must be, too.

We value constructive feedback for our academies. As a public education model, Great Hearts yearns to provide access and community for all students and faculty, and we are disappointed to learn that you have not experienced that sense of community at our academy. We acknowledge that school culture may vary from academy to academy, and as a network, we see the culture as guiding force in its overall adherence to the mission to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty. Please know that your comments are valued and reviewed to help us ever improve in this very human endeavor.

We value constructive feedback and will share it with our leadership. We know our communities make our schools a special place to learn and thrive. Thanks for being an important part of that. We are aware of the concerns with pay. We have been engaged in ongoing work on this issue for several years despite no significant funding increases from the states in which we operate, and simultaneously we must balance the need to maintain smaller class sizes, robust network resources, and safe and welcoming campuses. Great Hearts does provide excellent benefits (medical, dental, etc.), with employee premiums that are significantly below the national and regional averages. In the last year we have worked to make changes and we have increased our salary schedules for the upcoming school year. Moreover, our benefits package is excellent and enhances our compensation package. We will continue to make improvements in this area. As a public education model, Great Hearts yearns to provide access and community for all students and faculty, and we are disappointed to learn that you have not experienced that sense of community at your academy. We acknowledge that school culture may vary from academy to academy, and as a network, we see the culture as guiding force in its overall adherence to the mission to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty.

Pros

This program is a great space to learn about traditional teaching methodology and building solid student:teacher relationships. The need for human connection is quickly fading to the background of contemporary learning models, and Great Hearts values and privileges human connection.

Cons

The culture is selectively punitive. The idea of uniforms as a means of eliminating distractions is a fantasy when the rules are not enforced. The uniform issue is as relevant as the selection of textbook, which also needs attention.
