      Expensive member premium due to incompetence & unlimited employee overtime pay.

      Pros

      Unlimited overtime, timesheet padding & supervisors who overlook or allow overtime abusers. Supervisor lackeys can take advantage of the situation by becoming favorites of sups or dept mgrs. Extended AM/PM & lunch breaks are a plus because some mgrs are doing it too. Great fringe benefit.

      Cons

      Favoritism, incompetent, management slackers who delegate very well & take credit of achievements of hard working employees. Managers who brow beat employees to do more but refuse to lift a finger to ease the work overload & are constantly "in a meeting" when they are visiting friends.

      Pros

      HMSA is a good employer for many reasons. There are positions for a variety of interests. Underwriting, claims administration/processing, liaison to the physician community, IS, IT, credit union, finance and accounting, sales, marketing, lobbying, legal, fraud and abuse, and many more. Benefits are good although they used to be better and there are many talented people to work with.

      Cons

      Over the last 10 years, there have been so many retirements and a tremendous amount of knowledge has walked out the door. Unfortunately, there are gaps that exist and training of new employees has not kept up with the need for an informed and fully agile employee base. There are great people to do the work but the tools needed to develop into great employees are lacking. This creates backlogs of work which can lead to crisis management rather than well thought out planning and execution.

      Pros

      The people are fine, particularly if you make a concerted effort to know them. HMSA is filled with cliques and not entirely easy to navigate, but you'll rarely see a truly negative person.

      Cons

      The company has trouble making decisions, resulting in literally hundreds of initiatives competing for employee time and focus. The insurance environment isn't exactly pressure-filled, so you'll have plenty of time to get things done. But particularly as the company renovates the HQ over these 3-4 years, people are working in cramped environments which raises tensions and decreases efficiency.
