Pros

The name opens all kinds of opportunities once you look for a job. It helps with your next salary also. Having Harvard on my resume has been the key to getting many job interviews and was directly responsible for getting me 10%-20% more pay in one of my job offers. People tend to be very impressed with the name.

Cons

It is very competitive and graduate students get very little respect. Professors don't have much respect for a student's time -- they will call meetings only when it suits them and will be consistently late. They don't give much positive feedback and they don't spend much time thinking about their students' projects. The good part is that it encourages independence.

Pros

Being an academic institution, the opportunities to further your education are almost endless. The growth of one's career is somewhat limited. It is a perfect place for someone just out of college and still doesn't know what s/he wants to do for a career...or is switching careers. I was able to take many classes at Harvard's continuing education for a small amount. After several years of service and with management approval, you can take classes at the university itself.

Cons

The name 'Harvard' leads to much pretension. The university is so big that you often don't see your direct impact on the world (if that is what you seek).

Pros

Respect from outsiders at working for a major university. The benefits are very good, and hours are flexible. I'm able to work at home two days a week, which is nice since I live in New Hampshire. At times it can be a stimulating work environment since many bright, motivated people work here.

Cons

Small fish in a big pond. Without a PhD, you're not respected outside your own department. Management has no interest in developing career paths for employees. There's no sense of being part of a larger community and I have no feeling of being connected to Harvard Medical School. Hard work and extra effort are not rewarded -- there's no external motivation to exceed expectations.
