Pros

Decent pay for part-time and full time. Good hours during Christmas.

Cons

Poor management. There are no opportunities to advance to a full-time position. If you get hired on as part-time, that is where you stay, but are expected to work like a full time employee with fewer hours. You are also expected to show up every time you are called in. Full-time employees treat you like you are below them, and expected to do all their work. Overall, you end up underappreciated, underpaid, and overstressed. This job is not for the faint of heart

More Work, No Additional Pay

Pros

Employee discount and one guaranteed day off.

Cons

I am a full-time department head of three departments, one of them being a service department. I do not receive any extra pay (compared to other full timers who have one department) for having such responsibility (including ordering and pricing all three departments), instead, I am given less people and less time to get the same workload finished and when it is not finished, I get "jokingly" harassed. Often, I have to "listen for the bell" while being put throughout the store and customers are not pleased when I cannot appear instantly, though we aren't supposed to be placed outside of the department. There isn't any down-time in the seasons anymore and everyone is pushed towards the edge with the sweatshop workload and unrealistic expectations. Customer service also doesn't seem to be important, either, as higher management only care about seasonal and project memos being complete. Customers have noticed that employees look stressed. Note for part-timers: you'll likely have to wait until someone leaves before you can obtain full-time. Management tends to just give part-timers full-timer responsibiltiies without any added pay, like being a department head. Many will feel used and rightfully so. Nobody tells people this when they apply, but this company is not a cute little Christian craft store. You will be standing for long periods of time (my store doesn't even schedule 15 minute breaks) and will be working hard physically to the point of your body aching. Being understaffed will also mean that there will be less people to make sure safety proceedures are done properly. It is actually a very demanding job for it just being a retail store. You will also spend a LOT of time moving the same product from one area to another, often times being in the way of customers and making them angry.

Pros

The company has good retail location hours and are closed on Sundays. They also offer a substantial yearly bonus for employees based on number of years served. Though this may seem enticing it is not worth the treatment received or what you will go through to obtain it.

Cons

No work life balance. With all media surrounding this company and their beliefs, you wouldn't be able to tell as a store employee. Employees are taken advantage of and treated horribly. I worked there for over ten years and saw so many employees get away with ridiculous things that wouldn't be tolerated by any other organization, yet saw so many veteran employees get terminated for the smallest errors without prior warning of any kind.
