Pros

One of the few design jobs in the area where illustration and typography skills are heavily utilized. Workloads can fluctuate, like with any job, but most Team Leaders are great at working with you if something takes longer than expected. Overall, the people are great. They are the type of people that you’ll miss when you leave, and that you may forge long friendships with.

Cons

Work can get repetitive. You’ll get the same type of jobs at the same time of year, every year. Eventually, you will start to feel more like a production designer, rather than a creative. At times you will feel micromanaged. Just recently, all designers were asked to fill out PDF time logs, to account for their actions throughout the day. Clients can be unreasonable and aren’t held accountable for their actions. They have been known to ask for designs that rip-off independent artists. The company hires most designers straight out of school, which seems great, but in reality, it’s just to pay them lower, and seemingly to trick them into thinking Hobby Lobby is a "leader in the industry". They lure young designers in with pictures of beautiful work spaces, and grand speeches about how everything is so creative, but then the atmosphere is rigid, and lacks a collaborative spirit. I’ve been there 7 years, and I’ve rarely seen a designer with previous experience start at Hobby Lobby, and then stay there for more than a year – most of them can easily see straight through the charade. Management lacks transparency, but they either don’t realize it, or refuse to acknowledge it. The scandals that the company gets involved with can take its toll on you. Sometimes you may come to work with protesters on the edge of campus. And since the company doesn’t internally acknowledge anything you hear in the media, it can be hard to know the type of people you are really working for.

Pros

The pay is decent for retail, but not enough to justify the demanding schedule and expectations of management.

Cons

The district manager has high expectations, which translate to high expectations for middle management (store manager, co-manager), which translate to high expectations for retail workers. Many times we would have to work past our scheduled shift to complete inventory (one time staying until 1 AM - YES, for a store that closes at 8 PM), shelving resets, or stocking seasonal. There were not enough employees (11 full-time employees, 3 managers, 2-3 part-time cashiers) for a store that was roughly 50,000 sq ft. Some days we would be stuck with a 12 hour shift, but once the task was complete our hours would be cut later in the week so that we did not receive the additional overtime pay that we expected. This would also mean that there were only about 5 people working on Fridays and Saturdays. This was difficult when I was a cashier during Christmas. Lines would be incredibly long and I would have no backup. Customers would get angry at me when I was only trying to work as efficiently as possible at the check-outs. We also had to type in each individual price and discount at the register. No bar code scanning or inventory management, it was all manual! While some of my coworkers were pretty cool people, I would not return to Hobby Lobby to work for them.

Pros

I was looking forward to getting full time because the pay was good

Cons

They will use you and make you work full time hours if you are a hard worker and dedicated. I would come in everytime someone called out and i pretty much always got full time hours because of everyone else calling out and no show no calls. They gave away next full time position that was promised to me multiple times and i was told I needed to stay in my position as a part time cashier because of my reliability and I was told I would not even be considered for the full time position because of my "confusion. " I have anxiety and I know exactly what manager meant by that, I was told I wouldn't even get the chance to try out the position. I was told seniority was always first choice on my first day and have always been told that and I had worked there about 7 months and a new cashier that had just started 2 weeks before got the full time position.
