Unreliable and micro-managing

Pros

They make you train for like 30 hours. They will pay you to numb your brain in beat in concepts you spent 4 years learning when you got your teaching degree.

Cons

$15 an hour for this? Come on, these days I can make $20 an hour delivering pizzas. So getting paid almost minimum wage to deal with their strict dress code and unreliable hours is kind of crazy. I have been in my car, driving to the center when they have called me to cancel my shift. Let's just say, if you live more than 10 min away form the center, don't bother. They are more than happy to let students canceling a session destroy your budget and not theirs. It will hit your bank account, not theirs. Nevermind the fact they take quite a cut every time you spend an hour with a student, they refuse to provide the cushion of protection and security that supposed to be obtained by working for a company instead of yourself. If I wanted to roll the dice with students not showing and thus me not getting paid, I would have tutored myself and taken the additional profits to pad this instability. In the time I worked there, I only got ONE SHIFT where I worked my entire available time. Any shift where I was secluded to get more than 5 hours would be cut the day of to a 2 or 1.5 hour shift. Let's just say this got very old, very fast and did not pay the bills. In addition, I would like to mention the micro-managing which drove me up the wall. I am sorry, but I am a teacher. I am used to parents and society not treating me like an actual professional, but an educational institution? All teachers are required to teach students the exact same way no matter what. At first, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. "They have lots of teachers, they want to keep it consistent for the students." I understood and respected that, and if that is where the management stopped, I wouldn't have complained. However, I was undercut by directors criticizing me in front of students, not allowed to speak with any parent ever, or teach up to date math techniques that help struggling learners grasp concepts. It was hard for me. Every day drained me. I did not feel like a teacher, but just a glorified babysitter in dress pants.

Helping kids learn. Colleagues with ethics and professionalism

Cons

Inexperienced management promoted without merit. Management engages in abusive behavior and doesn't hold themselves accountable to the same standards as employees.
