Not the best place to work

Pros

IGN should be a fun place to work if you think about it - we're all about video games, and the office has the requisite fun stuff like ping pong, air hockey, arcade games and the occasional beer keg. Also the company is fairly small so it's easy to contact whoever you need to - just walk over to their desk or office.

Cons

Management is hugely inconsistent. Some managers are inspirational and good to work with; others are incredibly ignorant, thoughtless, irritable, or disrespectful. The longer I stay at IGN, the more I realize how political the company is. Given our small size, the level of politicization is just unbelievable. Promotions and positive feedback are given out like patronage, while inexplicably-unfavored people with the right skills and the right attitude are set up to fail. As others have mentioned, the pay structure sucks and significant raises are almost impossible to obtain. Bonuses are minuscule.

Pros

Working with the people was an enjoyment as well as being in the game community. The common goal towards improving IGN was something worth coming in for.

Cons

Senior management was poor in many areas. Some should not even be in their roles. Most are failing but the higher ups choose to turn a blind eye to it. To many silos and finger pointing. You can see how groups are not working for the benefit of IGN but the benefit of themselves. Lack of focus and communication on what IGN needs to become and how to get there.

Pros

We have the ability to do what we think is right and ask for forgiveness if we fail. Where else can you show up to work in flip flops and short, exercise your mind and truly be connected. You will have to carry me out in a body bag...ok, maybe not but I'm hooked and enjoy coming to work each day.

Cons

No bagels on Monday... Commute can be long at times....
